Hi there,

Has anybody been to the Sunset Beach Montego Bay or the Rose Hall lately? If so which is better? I am traveling with family which consists of 4 children 5 years old and under and 6 adults (3 of them single). I was looking for a place that would suit all ages. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Laur

My husband and I will be at Sunset Beach the last week of April. Both resorts seem to have similar activities for all ages. However, I would recommend Sunset Beach. I looked at both of them before settling on SSB. It looked like it had more fun (brand new waterpark, etc.) and I hear there is construction going on now at Rose Hall.

CaribbeanTraveler1,

Since you have been to the Sunset...how is the beach there? Nice? and are there any local restuarants that we can go to with kids? I heard of a place on the beach that grills lobster...have you heard of this place?

Regarding beaches. It all depends on what you like.

The beach at Sunset sits on a reef so coral and shells wash up on shore constantly. The staff rakes and cleans and removes it constantly too. But the water is clear most of the time (it depends on the direction of the wind) and it doesn't get deep real fast (good for small children) and the snorkeling 100 yards offshore is the best on the west end of the island.

The beach at Rose Hall is ok but the waves can get big and I've never seen it perfectly clear...but then I've only been there in January. There's no snorkeling at all.

Both places are great for fams w/children but like another poster stated, it sounds like Rose Hall may have some renovating going on while Sunset's renovation is complete.

I would suggest Sunset and take a day trip to Doctor's Cave Beach....get there early and get a spot under the palm trees near the outdoor fresh water showers. There's all kinds of resonable places to eat and there's a spot with $2 Red Stripes right on the beach.

As far as lobster on the beach....I never heard of any place like that in MoBay. Anyone else heard of it?

I would suggest the Pelican for lobster or if you want to take a trip to Negril go to the Office of Nature on Bloody Bay for the best grilled lobster this side of heaven. You're children will experience the true Jamaica as the people who hang out there are "themselves"....if you know what I mean. They're beautiful.

I know a man with a new, airconditioned van named Joseph Forsythe 876 438 5044 cell or 876 952 5528 home who can accomodate your entire group and only charges $25 a head to go to Negril for the whole day. He'll provide a cooler, you can get ice at your resort and he'll stop for water, soda and beer at a supermarket on the way. He know's where to go in Negril and now that we showed him where the Office is...he knows where that is also.

Call him from the lobby phone (if you use the one in your room, they charge). It is a local call from Sunset or Rose Hall. Joseph will come and pick you up and take you where ever you want to go. He used to be a gardener so he points out all the flora and fauna.

I'm pretty sure the lobster place you are referring to is the Office of Nature in Negril (as stated above).

Enjoy!

Thank you very much CaribbeanTraveler1. I will definately take Joseph's number with us.

I already booked at the Sunset Beach today before I read your response. So I'm glad I did. Thanks again for your advice.

Lauren

Caribbeantraveler1:

Hi there! Thanks for all the info. Can you please tell me about Doctors Cave Beach? My friend and I are taking our children to SSB soon and are trying to plan an activity outside the resort. Kids are 10, 9 & 7. Suggestions are most welcome. PS. We (the adults) have done Dunns River Falls and decided to skip it this time with the kids).

Thanks a bunch!
