Sandals Grande Ocho Rios-money well spent!

We just got back from our trip to Jamaica where we stayed at Sandals Grande Ocho Rios. I would recommend this resort to anyone. Food was excellent, the alcohol was flowing, (if you drink) and there was on-site entertainment if you don't like or do excursions. Rooms were very comfortable and well decorated and clean, staff was VERY friendly and the MANOR main pool was awesome. The beach was small and clean but adequate enough. I'd say perhaps maybe 3-4 city blocks long, including the water sports area. If you want alot of beachfront I guess I would recommend another Sandals resort, maybe Negril. I'm not sure. I've never been to Negril. To anyone considering this resort though, your money would be well spent. One final note, the bus ride from the airport to Sandals Ocho Rios, was not as bad as I've read. The ride is bumpy and between 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on construction. They do have alot of road construction and some parts of the bus ride are bumpy, but not the whole entire trip, just portions of. It was not as horrible as some people made it out to be. It's just long when you've already travelled on the plane and you want your vacation to start!

Your message was very helpful. I am particularily interested in the bus ride. Some of the messages really describe it as a horror. Did you go on the bus both to and from MoBay? What was the size of the bus? Any activities or tours you would reccomend? The weather for the area predicted a lot of rain, did it rain some everyday for you, if so very much? Thanks

2fortravel - just got back 9/3 from SGOR. Cowgirl40rocks is right, the place is great. I posted a review in the SGOR hotel link called beautiful resort...would do it again (or something like that). It might answer some of your questions.

Hey 2fortravel. Nice to see a fellow Kansan on this message board. I'm from a small town, south of Topeka. My husband and I got back from SGOR 1 week ago. I checked the weather religiously up until the day we left and it said that there was a 60% chance of rain everyday. It showered for 30 minutes the day that we arrived and was sunny the rest of the time. The best sun is from 8am-2pm everyday...then it starts to cloud a little bit but it's a welcome break, trust me. Most evenings, the clouds would clear off and reveal an awesome sunset. I just posted my review this evening so it should show up in a day or two...I included some pictures. The bus ride was no big deal AT ALL. I wanted it to go faster for obvious reasons, going and coming. I would compare the bus to a Greyhound...don't remember it being particularly bumpy. You don't go faster than 50 mph the whole time. If you have room to spare, pack a little travel pillow. I really could have used one on the bus trip...especially driving back to the airport to go home. Holler if you have any more questions! :)

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Jamaica

Thank you to each one of you for taking the time to post these positive remarks.

This hotel and the whole chain got a bad rap when the hotel first opened.

The complainers just wanted a compensation trip and they really made some horrible remarks about the hotel, the Jamaican people and just everything in general. The thread lasted for months.

So, it is a real joy for me to read your comments.

A traveller is one who accepts and enjoys everything from their new destination. It makes them appreciate what they have at home.

A tourist is one who complains that the coffee is too cold and the ice is hot.

Glad you know the difference.

Valentino's and Orchid's are both normally reservation restaurants and require closed toes shoes, slacks and shirts with collar and sleeves for men. None of the restaurants took reservations when we where there last month. All of the restaurants are good, depends on your tastes and what kind of food you like. We liked Valentino's but some say San Gennaro is better. Market Place buffet was good; breakfast, lunch or dinner. Really had no major complaints with any of them

SGOR has entertainment nightly. Beach party on Monday and pool party on Friday are fun. Lots of things to do during the day in addition to excursions you can take. I posted a rather long review around 5 SEP ("beautiful resort...") that has a lot more detail.
