L'Ile de la Tortue (Tortuga Island) |
|
Does anyone have information on Tortuga? I am thinking of going there in the near future and would appreciate any facts on transportation, hotels, infastructure etc. Am interested in participating in some long-term missionary related work if possible. Have a background in travel/hospitality businesses, so thought I could develop some new tourist busienss to the area which might help this desperate economy.I have been trying for some time to contact a French Canadian priest, Bruno Blondeau, who I read about awhile ago, to see if there might be a way to assist him in the mission that he started on the island back in 1977, but have been unsuccessful. Any information provided would be greatly appreciated.Kindest regards,John Steelejsteele@cuvs.com |

I was on Isle de la Tortue in 1998. I went by boat from the mainland as there is no airstrip on the island so unless you can get a ride on a helicopter, boat is the only way. I suggest that you contact any of the following for more info. on the school etc. Lasallian Volunteers4351 Garden City Drive, Suite 200Landover, MD 20785David KasievichDirector of Lasallian VolunteersTelephone: (215) 382-9394Email: dkasievich@cbconf.orgAlisa MackseyAssociate Director of Lasallian VolunteersTelephone: 301-459-9410 Email: amacksey@cbconf.orgJames RuckDirector of Development and RecruitmentLasallian VolunteersEmail: jruck@cbconf.org

There are no hotels on the island but there are people who will rent a room in their homes. The island is basically divided into two, lowland along the coastal areas with absolutely fabulous white sand beaches, no roads and no cars.. trans. is by boat and highlands where there are not too bad roads, and which is also the location of the main town, churches and Fr. Blondeau's house and school. The highlands are quite clean and well run, but lack electricity and as the whole island is more or less cut off from the mainland, the logistics of getting around, even getting a car there, means that you need local people to help you. The medical facilities are very poor and people go to the not much better mainland for treatment. If you have more questions please feel free to email me at andrianpelly@hotmail.com

I might be little bit late, but i was born and raised in that island. most of my family still live there. the last time i was there was in 2003. i am a police officer here in las vegas nevada and i am a born again christian, i don't know if that make any difference. so if you are interested in anything let me know. because my family planned to do mission there also in the future. also bruno blondeau is not a priest. he was a canadian catholic missionary who was the director of my school. he is old now and no longer in charge. my uncle is in charge of one of his school. my email address is blessedservant@cox.net.
