Hurricanes in Guadeloupe in August?

We are spending 10 days in Guadeloupe in august 2012. What happens if there is a hurricane? We are from Chicago so a hurricane would be very foreign to us! Would we be able to evacuate the island? Do a lot of the locals leave the island in August for safety reasons?

Hi there,

In the stormy season it's only once every 3-4 years that the Gua region gets hit with at least a storm warning. And then generally no people evacuate, but the usual safeguards are activated: putting thatches at the windows, locking everything double, and having safe shelter rooms in one's own building or shared buildings per village. Hotels always have some form of shelter.

So except for a few days of your holiday being more or less being spoilt, and the risk of a delayed return to the USA if the airport has to close, there's not much more that can go wrong...

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

The islands are generally well prepared for storms and hurricane's, it's something that they prepare for as there is a risk during the season.

If a hurricane warning is issued there are often additional flights added should visitors and residents want/need to evacuate. The hotels/resorts, etc all board up (and stock up on supplies), usually having generators and backup systems on stand-by for after the storm.

August is a great time to visit the island as it's not as busy or expensive as "peak" season - enjoy your vacation to Guadeloupe and all the island has to offer.
