Around $50/night: Carib. Cottage Club, BeachInn, Hideaway...

or Maitland's, Bailey's Inn, Windward Sands, Lazy Lagoon or other

I'm looking for a place to stay in Grenada in May for 8 nights while doing a volunteer work trip. Trying to keep costs down by considering places only in the $50 or under range, but willing to go a bit higher for greater location or amenties.

Would prefer to be on minibus route or with close walk to bus route. Walk to beach would be nice but not necessary. a/c not necessary but having screens on windows would be essential. minimal kitchenette facilities also essential--hotplate or electric kettle, small fridge, etc.

will also be renting a car for at least part of the stay, so will need parking facilities on site.

Have been quoted $65/night at the GEM directly on beach. Is this a substantially better place to be, within walking distance of a couple of restaurants and right on beach?

I assume that most places will be quite safe on the island, but I will be a solo female traveler and would like reassurance nonetheless.

Thank you so much for input!

We are staying at Caribbean Cottage Club at end of Feb so will let you know what it is like. Have spoken to owner Vittoria and she seems lovely and helpful and lives on site which might be better for you if you are travelling alone. She also has a couple of dogs that are very friendly. Their rate in May isUS$47 a night plus 8% tax. You can walk to Grand Anse beach from there believe it is about 20 mins walk and there is bus stop nearby and on bus route. There is room for parking there as when we are there we will also be hiring a car, she also now has a restaurant on site as well with bar. Might be worth contacting her for a chat.

ej....have you looked at Grenada Gold? Staying for that long, it is nice to have a place with a kitchen and a washing machine. It is not on a beach but in a neighborhood so might be more likely to be on a bus route. It's only $30/nite for a single or $60 for a double. They also give you a great car rental rate. Enjoy!!!! I know we are looking forward to 13 days in March.

devonion, thanks for the input. CCC looks like a tremendous value for the money. hope you enjoy your stay, both there in particular and Grenada in general.

sheriej, actually Grenada Gold was the first place I tried! They're booked for the entire month of May, unfortunately. I was even willing to split my stay between two places if I could stay there, but no dice!

I also tried the lovely looking Aqua Apartment, right on the water with its own pool and owners living next door, but they're also booked!

devonian, I hope you enjoy Grenada as much as I did on my first trip there!

yeah, I've been in touch with the GrenadaTravelForum folks and they've been helpful, but most of them there haven't stayed at the places that they're recommending. It's down to Hideaway, Carib Cottage Club, or a "splurge" at $65/night to stay in a new apartment managed by the same folks we rented villa from last year. Since I already know and like those folks so much, and since it's walkable to the beach at Prickly Bay, am strongly leaning towards the latter right now.

you've already got my top pick on your list--Boots! Be warned that some nights you can smell the sugar factory on the air, and it's not pleasant. but once you know that it's sugar factory and not something er, unsanitary, it's much easier to ignore. and then the wind changes and you can't smell it anymore anyway. I don't say this to put you off, just so that you can be prepared to expect. We loved Boots and went back a second time for our last meal on the island. Just be sure to call ahead to let them know you're coming. it's not so much that they'll run out of tables but it's to let them know how much to prepare for.

We loved lunch at Spice Island Beach Resort and it was our second favorite place after Boots. We spent about US $40 for lunch for two, including drinks and tip, on two different occasions. Great setting, great food, great service--the whole works.

We loved the setting at True Blue Bay restaurant (if you go, ask for table on the water when you call for reservation), but the food was a disappointment the night we ate there. Since most folks rave about the place, I figure we must have hit an off night.

Lunch, or at least an afternoon rum punch at Nutmeg restaurant in downtown St. George's. Maybe go at an off time to assure yourself of a table by the huge picture windows that will be open if it's not raining.

We enjoyed lunch at Aquarium restaurant. You can rent beach chairs for the day and put them on your tab there. Lovely setting, good food. Slightly pricier than our food at Spice Island, but that did include two chair rentals. No shade on that part of the beach except for one large tree.

Dinner at Red Crab in LAE was very good one night. What I would put in the moderate-to-expensive category. Really good seafood.

Lunch at La Sagesse--we spent two afternoons here as it turned out to be our favorite beach on the island. Cheap chair rental, excellent seafood, moderate to expensive for lunch. Best pina colada I had on our two weeklong trip, with the juice of one lime added to it to cut the sweetness. Can't recall what our tab came to for the day. My old trip report is here in the forum with exact prices for everything if you want to search for it.

Anyway, have a *great* time and I look forward to reading about your impressions of Grenada when you return. I'm not counting down the days to what I've taken to calling my "Grenadian Homecoming."

I have just come back from Grenada a week ago, i go on holiday there every year. This time when i went there, i decided to stay in the lazy lagoon.Everything looked nice on there web site,so i booked 2 weeks there.Staying at the Lazy Lagoon was the worst mistake i made;it was dirty, everything broke in the space of 6 days, there was mice, droppings everywhere and the manager was nowhere to be found when i wanted to complain about these things.I left there after 6 nights, when the manager knew we were leaving he insisted that we still owed him for the full 14 nights.Which we refused to pay.Lazy lagoon charges $60u.s a night, although it was cheap,it was not worth the uncomfortable living.I moved into the Grand Anse Beach Palace hotel inc.It was lovely, right on the beach, lovely views.theres a bus stop right outside,a shop,a bar on the grounds, good security and most of all the owners were very kind. They told me if i needed anything, just to knock on there door. They were there to give advice,if there was anything i needed.Ive never met more lovely people than they were.Dont stay in Jennys place either,my friend stayed there and had everything stolen. There are many places to stay that are cheap and nice. Here are the names of a few apartments which i havent been to.Roydons apartments-$60-$80(us).beach inn-$65-$145.Tropicana inn-$67-$77.Winward sand inn $40-$450.Hope you find a good one.Your going to have such a good time,Its paradise!!!!

I could not believe the bad rap that was given to Jenny's Place re.

Security. I have stayed at Jenny's Place as recently as two months ago and had a simply wonderful time. They have a system for Security that is fool proof (dogs patrol the property at night!). If anyone had problems with theft I suggest that it was due to their own carelessness. I never had a worry nor did anyone else who stayed there at the same time we did. Sounds to me as if someone is deliberately trying to give a bad name to one of the best properties on Grenada.

Jenny's Place provides a unique experience. We found it to be well managed, clean, friendly and thoroughly secure by any standards. We plan on staying there again next year.

Hi ejcrowe

Just to say that have returned from our hol to Grenada/Union Island and can say that we were more than happy with the Caribbean Cottage Club. The accommodation is simple but very attractive in the wood and has great views of the sea. Vittoria the owner could not of been more helpful or friendly. Not far to walk to Grand Anse beach from there as path that you can take to beach. Daily maid service and nice that there is a restaurant on site especially if just got off a long flight.

Thanks for posting, Devonian, and glad you had a great time. I won't be staying at the CCC because I found someplace else at a great introductory rate, but I think I'll check it out while I'm there in May for a future trip.

Did you have any trouble at all with mosquitos in the cottage? Are the windows screened? I can't remember from the website if they are or not...

The windows at the CCC were screened, but as a precaution used plug in mosquito repellants. Thre is a mosquito over the bed, so did not really have much problem with mossies, but I do have a tendency to get bitten so use insect repellant of an evening just in case.
