devonian, I hope you enjoy Grenada as much as I did on my first trip there!
yeah, I've been in touch with the GrenadaTravelForum folks and they've been helpful, but most of them there haven't stayed at the places that they're recommending. It's down to Hideaway, Carib Cottage Club, or a "splurge" at $65/night to stay in a new apartment managed by the same folks we rented villa from last year. Since I already know and like those folks so much, and since it's walkable to the beach at Prickly Bay, am strongly leaning towards the latter right now.
you've already got my top pick on your list--Boots! Be warned that some nights you can smell the sugar factory on the air, and it's not pleasant. but once you know that it's sugar factory and not something er, unsanitary, it's much easier to ignore. and then the wind changes and you can't smell it anymore anyway. I don't say this to put you off, just so that you can be prepared to expect. We loved Boots and went back a second time for our last meal on the island. Just be sure to call ahead to let them know you're coming. it's not so much that they'll run out of tables but it's to let them know how much to prepare for.
We loved lunch at Spice Island Beach Resort and it was our second favorite place after Boots. We spent about US $40 for lunch for two, including drinks and tip, on two different occasions. Great setting, great food, great service--the whole works.
We loved the setting at True Blue Bay restaurant (if you go, ask for table on the water when you call for reservation), but the food was a disappointment the night we ate there. Since most folks rave about the place, I figure we must have hit an off night.
Lunch, or at least an afternoon rum punch at Nutmeg restaurant in downtown St. George's. Maybe go at an off time to assure yourself of a table by the huge picture windows that will be open if it's not raining.
We enjoyed lunch at Aquarium restaurant. You can rent beach chairs for the day and put them on your tab there. Lovely setting, good food. Slightly pricier than our food at Spice Island, but that did include two chair rentals. No shade on that part of the beach except for one large tree.
Dinner at Red Crab in LAE was very good one night. What I would put in the moderate-to-expensive category. Really good seafood.
Lunch at La Sagesse--we spent two afternoons here as it turned out to be our favorite beach on the island. Cheap chair rental, excellent seafood, moderate to expensive for lunch. Best pina colada I had on our two weeklong trip, with the juice of one lime added to it to cut the sweetness. Can't recall what our tab came to for the day. My old trip report is here in the forum with exact prices for everything if you want to search for it.
Anyway, have a *great* time and I look forward to reading about your impressions of Grenada when you return. I'm not counting down the days to what I've taken to calling my "Grenadian Homecoming."
