Will I go stir crazy at an all-inclusive?

My husband and I are attending a wedding at an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana (Now Larimar) next January. Our normal vacation involves lots of activities, exploring and diving into the culture so all-inclusive have never crossed our minds. We are trying to decide how long to stay and since we aren't the type of people who enjoy laying on a beach all day we are afraid of going stir crazy on the resort. Yes, I'm aware that there are activities on the resort but I can only snorkel so many times. Has anyone else felt this way and been surprised?

I hear ya. All-inclusive isn't for everyone, and it's not the sort of vacation I take, every time. I do choose AI when all I want is to chill... it really is perfect for that. There are excursions you can book that take you off premises... that could be something you'd enjoy. For sure, look into PC Mike's tours, if you're interested in local culture.

But, since you're going for a wedding, and presumably know some or many of the other people that will be there, that in itself will make it a great time.... socializing, dining, etc.

If boredom is a concern, then book 4-5 days. You can always stay longer, next time.

As you are there for a social occasion... a wedding.... I can imagine that will take up a couple of your days socialising etc and enjoying the company of a group of people you already know. Take some time for a trip off the property and see the country and it's people.

The rest of the time..... I'm sure the chill pill magic of the DR will slowly grab your senses and you'll sway to the vibe like we all do.

Maybe don't book longer than 5 days but I'm betting you may just be a tad sorry it's not for a few days longer!!

Book a four day package, you'll use up all/much of the first day getting there from Iowa and getting checked in to your room and heading off for your first included meal, probably the buffett, possibly not impressive.

You'll meet up with the other wedding guests by dinner and might have a late night partying with everyone at one of the bars after watching whatever show is presented in the theatre after your a la carte dinner.

Next day you will be looking for activity!! Just thinking of the last place I stayed, you might take a couple water aerobics classes in between meals and drinks that day, play some beach volleyball, or even sit by the pool with some of the other guests, socializing. Oh, there's a dance class maybe over here, or a bike tour over there, or a wine tasting.

Repeat evenings, with different a la carte dinner each night....Mexican, Dominican, Italian, Steakhouse, Seafood, Japanese.....oh never mind, you only have four days.

Of course the third day is the WEDDING. Lets figure a nice visit to the spa for some pampering before you put on your wedding finery and attend the happy event with all your friends/relatives.

Last day, you may be tired out but this is the day you booked a tour to see some of the area. Then you have to pack and get your travel documents in order, select which place you want to have dinner, and possibly hit the hay a little earlier since you have to get to the airport at least two hours before flight time tomorrow, another long travel day. Feels like you just did this, :-(

OK, back home, NOW you can decide if you wish you would have stayed a few more days. But you had a taste and attended the wedding, so either way you win. You never go back to an All inclusive, or you book your next trip right away--and for a longer stay!

We were in a similar position last year and spent a week at an AI. The time actually went very qucikly and it was nice to have everything done for us. The chance to mix with the guests (USA, European and Dominican) was a good point of the holiday and if the guests include any Dominicans you can at least guarantee that the wedding dance will be good.

If you are new to the DR the opportunites to see something of the country are a bit limited. Punta Cana was developed in a sparsely populated area at the very eastern end of the country.Activities are very much focused on the resorts because most people pay for an AI package in advance. The number of facilities-cafes, bars etc ouside the resort are also limited.

We book all-inclusive resorts more for a convenience vs. being confined to the resort. It probably isn't cost effective but we still enjoy eating out at local restaurants, having some brew with locals, taking an excursion or hopping on the bus/taxi and traveling around the area. You can limit yourself to the grounds as much as you desire but there are some beautiful areas to visit and some warm welcoming people to meet.

We travel with a group of friends so boredom isn't ever a factor.. You can always find something to do...on or off the resort.

My worst day on the beach is better than most days in the hills of Kentucky. That said we normally go on an off property excursion every couple of days to break up the stay.

Since this doesn't seem to fit your definition of "vacation", I would recommend to see it as a relaxing and fun get together with your friends and family instead..... it just so happens that this get together is on the beach! YAY!!!

Thank you all for your replies! This will definitely help. Now if only return flights back to the Mid-west didn't require a red eye ;)
