And the word for "peanuts" used in the Dominican Republic is "maní". It sounds very similar to "money" and there were some incidents of miscommunication where some tourists thought the staff was asking them for money when the staff was simply asking if they wanted peanuts!

Using Google Translate we pretype notes to attach to envelopes daily for the housekeeping tips. They have always told us they appreciated our attempt to learns some words of their language. The notes are in Spanish plus our native English.

I take a prepared list of basic phrases with me. We have found that the front desk personnel usually speak English. However, the room attendants speak very little. Sometimes it it difficult for me to explain to them what my problem is or what I need. There is a lot of pointing and hand gestures!! but I often leave little notes in Spanish to say thank you or to request something for the room.

For the most part we have not had any problems even though we don't speak the language.
