Dominican Republic safe with kids and how to get from LRM to

Hi,

Sorry for this "silly" question but I have a reservation with AA miles from SNA to Dom. Rep. and from there to Europe. It's just me the mom and 3 kids (7,7,10) for June 2014.

My husband is telling me it's not safe in the Dom. Rep. with just me and the kids.

Any suggestion?

By the way, I would fly into LRM from Miami on June 18th and out of Puerto P. June 30th.

I am assuming it's easy to get a bus and get from LRM to Puerto P.

Thanks for your help.

If you take the normal precautions you would anywhere you will be fine on the safety issue.

As to the transport it is not easy to get from LRM to Puerto Plata via bus, especially with kids. You will need a bus to Santo Domingo then another bus to Puerto Plata then a cab from the bus station to the airport. You would probably be better off hiring a cab, and this will be expensive at over $200.

To add to Bob's comment, you would need a taxi from the resort to the bus station in LRM, then bus ride to SD, then taxi from the SD LRM bus station to Caribe Tours or Metro Station in SD, bus ride to PP, then Taxi to resort. Would take almost 10 hours total if starting early in a.m. Taxi probably $250 or more o/w.

Thank that sounds more difficult than I thought. I might be better of renting a car.

I do have time (12 days) to make it over there.

Any recommendation on a 12 day in Dom. Rep. Is it too long?

Thanks

My best advice with 3 kids is to change the flights. Fly into POP or STI, not LRM. As nice as La Romana/Bayahibe are it is too far from POP. Even the cab ride would take 5+ hours with stops.

12 Days on the north coast would allow time to visit Santiago, Puerto Plata city, Sosua Beach, Cabarete beach, Monkey jungle for the kids, and so on. Plenty of beach/pool time left and not so much travel.

And no, please don't rent a car. Too many things can go wrong.

I have to second RV's advice Please do not rent a car here with the kids.

Do Fly to PP or Santiago. As he said lots to do on the north coast that will keep you and the kids busy.

I am using AA miles and that is the only airport they fly into apparently.

Now you scare me a little. I went once to the Dom. Rep. (10 years ago) and we rented a car.

Why is scary with the kids?

AA has daily non stop flights from Miami to Puerto Plata and Santiago.

Driving here is very dangerous as there are basically no laws that are obeyed, especially by the local publicos and moto drivers. If you have an accident eveyrone (drivers) goes to jail until it can be figured out. Regardless it will be your (the gringos) fault and cost you big time $$$ and you don't want to be spending a day or two in jail with your kids separated from you. Take a cab or change your flight plans

How would I be able to travel around in Dom. Rep if I do not get a rental car?

I remember they have little buses which stop everywhere.

Is that an option or not safe either?
