More news from inside the Island.
Destination Expert   What's this?
for Havana

I was trying to post this on the same thread I started on hurricane Ike aftermath but it looks like such thread is not opened for new posts anymore.

It has been hard trying to keep up with things as I have had to work personally on some recovering activities in my community plus things I had to do at the homes of my direct love ones.

Unfortunately info of direct interests for travelers is hard to collect as there is not a comprehensive report anywhere. I will try to summarize a couple of things in this thread in random choice:

1- NO Hotel suffered any damages within Havana perimeter and they are all fully functional.

2- Power has been restored to 95% of the City and it would be fully recovered sooner than later.

3- All tourists services are working in Havana

4- No Hotels and/or tourists services were impacted in Varadero. The entire site is fully functional, including its Airport.

5- Hotels in Vinales area (Pinar del Rio province) did suffer structural damages and reservations have been cancelled. They are working hard trying to make them functional by November (or before).

6- Isle of Youth tourists services are still unavailable.

7- All local interprovincial Buses (known as Astro Buses) are working on their schedules.

8- Viazul Buses are working on schedules.

9- Hotels in Bay of Pig did suffer although Playa Giron Hotel has been re-opened still Guama and Playa Larga are closed. Rest of activities within the area (re: diving, bird watching, snorkeling, Hatiguanico river tours, restaurants, etc) are back fully.

10- Trinidad is back to normal and roads that were flooded and damaged initially have been repaired already making traffic to/from this area to work on schedules. There are absolutely no power issues there.

Some of the bridges built along the causeway to Cayo Coco did suffered damages. Recovering works are intense and will be fully functional within the next week.

11- Holguin area did suffer and only Sol Rio de Mares resort is currently accepting reservations so far.

12- Santiago de Cuba tourist’s services are fully functional.

13- Still many services not working properly in Camaguey and Ciego de Avila.

14- Cuba’s 5 national coverage TV channels are fully back broadcasting their daily programs.

15- Radio stations are back

16- Phone connections are in about 70% fully recovered nationwide.

H_J:

You are trying to bring politics to a travel related Forum. I wonder where the biased sided info could be when mentioning a Hotel is open in Cayo Largo. That hotel is a joint venture with a foreign company btw so I may be representing Sol Melia here not the Cuban Gov…just as per your way of thinking.

If your intentions are genuine and you came to the Forum looking for information, then you would have no problems in receiving responses.

You are also kidnapping a duty it is not yours but the Moderator’s. As far as I know you are not one of them. I encourage you to contact them with your complain of the possibility that a Government official is providing travel related info from inside the island. It is my guess that as far as such hypothetical official complies with the rules they will be pretty happy to have travel related info on their website directed from a source that it is not in Massachusetts.

In any case, you can relax I do not need to be targeted by you or your editors. I am not what it seems to make you feel scary.

Enough said and enjoy your day!

Havana-Journal - someone asks a question and someone answers a question. Is there a problem here? I am abit confused.

Someone could ask how many resorts are open at Playa Esmeralda in the Holguin province. Someone would say three resorts. Would you then say that this area is closed?

Voyhavana simply answered a question...what is wrong?

Thank you Voy for your helpful and quick response.

Voy and others,

Yes, I am new to the forum but was only asking for some background on a prominent poster here.

Since everything in Cuba is run by the Cuban government, I thought it was a fair question to ask about the background of Voy.

I see that he wishes not to say he is NOT working for the Cuban government. If he is working for the Cuban government as a professional commentator on Cuba travel forums, I would like to know that.

One poster said "it would pay you to do a bit of research on whose posts you are trying to belittle."

1. I am doing a little research.

2. I am not trying to belittle Voy, just asking how he has access to so much information.

Regarding the glass half full. If there are ten or so hotels on Cayo Largo and all are open in season then a hurricane destroys the island so then only one hotel is open, I would say that the glass is 9/10ths empty since it was full previously.

I know people hate to mix politics and travel but if Voy is employed by the Cuban government to post on Cuba travel forums, I think it is relevant.

Read the threads people have posted on, do that as research.Who and what do you do for a living?Do you work for the Cuban government? Why are you not taking what is said here with a pinch of salt?Your enquires seem a bit like trolling to me.

Why doesn't HJ state on this thread what he says in his own profile: "Publisher of HavanaJournal.com and President of the Havana Journal Media Network. "

I think maybe you have a hidden agenda Mr. HJ?

Could he be a little biased?

Mr HJ has had no valuable input into this forum and is basically just here to criticise and nit-pick at other peoples postings.

whilst on the other hand; Voy has contributed so much useful, informative and helpful information over the years and has helped many many travellers in oh so many ways, keep up the good work Voy and dont sweat the small stuff.

I look forward to reading some valuable and helpful posts from HJ based on his recent personal travel experiences in Cuba.

I am not complaining about Voy and not looking to discredit him. I very much like his original post and his replies.

I was just wondering if he is paid by the Cuban government to post here.

You can attack me for being an outsider and having an agenda but as you can see, people can easily find out about my background. I have nothing to hide.

Also, people like cubacarol can send me a private message saying that I "have been advised politely to not ask personal questions." if she wants.

I am just asking to know more about the source of information. Whether Voy is a Canadian living in Cuba and working for a hotel chain or whether he is born and raised in Cuba and working as a professional commentator for the Cuban media, I would like to know.

Of course he is not obligated to me or anyone to reply but if he would like to post some information about his background or post a link to more information, I would very much like to read it.

Thank you.

I suppose you would also like to know if any reporters of any news service report news totally neutral as well, or do they have to go with their employers guidelines?

In other words what difference does it make?

I think as long as Voy's information is helpful and accurate, there is no relevance on where or even IF he works.

Tell me Mr HJ, What is your interest here on the Cuba forum, Is it to receive help and advice with your travel plans or just merely to delve into peoples personal business?

Voys personal background has no relevance or importance to the every day user of this forum, what is important is the helpful and factual information and advice that he gives out, for which he has been thanked a 1000 times over.

May I suggest Mr HJ that you use the private message facility if you wish to delve in Voy's personal life.
