I've used my Halifax debit card over here but they charged me a transaction fee. Check with your bank!!

Your Nationwide Debit card will be fine ...well mine has been for the past 5 years !!...in fact the best UK bank debit card ..except once ...see below

There are no fees at an ATM ..no transaction charges or withdrawal fees

When used outside Europe ( ie in Barbados) there is however now a 1% exchange rate loading which NW now pass on from Visa.

This is built into the exchange rate that is shown on your statement

Being a Visa card you do ( IMO) get a slightly better rate than with Mastercard

One word of caution ......Until April 2009 I experienced no problems when using my NW DC . On this occasion when I first used it at a Barbados ATM I discovered it was 'locked'

When I rang up I was told it was a security measure!!! It was resolved quickly ...but i still had to make the call..

I already knew that you had to advise your CREDIT card supplier but previously had not bothered about my debit card

Anyhow when I went to Calais in November I thought i would call NW to advise them that I might be using my Debit Card ..... i was told that there was no way they could put a 'note' on my Debit Card account ... the locking procedure was activated by computer and was random

I intend to take this up with them again before I go in April 2010

So a word of caution ...just ensure you have the UK contact details for NW ..in case this happens again

The NW Credit Card ( for goods & purchases ONLY) now also has this 1% Visa loading ..so there are better Credit Cards from the Post Office or Santander Zero ...but they are both Mastercards

See here for further info (UK only)

I've had the same problem of a locked card so now I drop by the ATM on the first or second day and just check if I can make a withdrawal instead of waiting until I am low on cash, gives you time to sort it out.
