Bermuda hotel for the less mobile

My husband and I are going to Bermuda for 8 nights in early May. We would like to stay in a small, but top-class hotel. We like the idea of The Pompano and The Reefs, but are worried about getting about, as neither of finds steps/stairs easy (my husband has arthritis and I have fibromyalgia). We would be really grateful for any suggestions.

The Reefs is built into the cliffs on a hill - even the able bodied may find it challenging negotiating the property.

They do offer golf cart shuttles - however to access the beach it is many steps down and just as many up - for some not an easy walk and this area is not accessible by gold cart!

While I usually recommend this hotel - you may want something not as hilly - perhaps other posters could let you know about more easily accessed venues as I am only familiar with The Reefs.

Yeah as Poppa said, I'm sure they would be happy to get you around in a golf cart.

I had an older friend of mine whose husband had mobility issues come visit one year. They stayed at Ariel Sands and the staff were so kind in how they went out of their way to make things easy for them. They are also a fairly hilly property but were given a room level with the clubhouse and a very short walk from there.

Hi

I use a cane to walk and we have stayed at Pompano many times without any problems. they have golf carts to take you around the property and any of the staff are more than willing to do this!

Try choosing a bulding close to the club house, either the Dolphin house or the building next to the pool.

the only problem i have is getting to the beach. the steps are many but i have done it in the past. i just take my time getting down and back up but i can do it and the ocean is well worth it once i am down there! the water is very calm. there is drink service on the beach too. and we time it so we leave the beach and head up for lunch and then stay by the pool for the rest of the afternoon.

we stayed in a new bulding this past October, the flying fish, and while it was a bit of a hike up the ramp the newer room was well worth it!

also Larry Lamb(owner) can get you a wheel chair from the red cross if needed. i used one to go to the Dockyards and into Hamilton. we used a taxi to go to the dockyards and the staff drove us to the ferry and we took the wheelchair onto the ferry to go into Hamilton. all very easy!

the staff also has a van to take you to the bus stop and the ferry.

which ever hotel you choose you'll love Bermuda!

feel free to ask more questions re: Pompano.

There are a couple of possibilities that you should check-out. As has been previously noted--

ARIEL SANDS-- http://www.arielsands.com/

would be one good choice, without much slope to the property...and relatively easy and convenient access to the #1 public bus route between downtown Hamilton and Saint George's

PINK BEACH CLUB-- http://www.pinkbeach.com/

might be another good choice.

CAMBRIDGE BEACHES-- http://www.cambridgebeaches.com/

is a '..flat..' property....but set farther back from the main road for public transportation convenience, though the property does offer shuttle service out to the public bus stop and offers their own infrequent private ferry shuttle to downtown Hamilton (I'm not sure of the schedule).

If being absolutely '..beach-front..' is not a primary consideration, then--

HORIZONS & COTTAGES-- http://www.horizonscottages.com/

is an option you might consider. It is located on the South Road, directly across from the private Coral Beach & Tennis Club (located on the western end of Elbow Beach....and shares reciprocal beach and dining privledges. I believe (but I'm not positive) that Horizons & cottages has a shuttle that will take guests across the road to the CB&TC.

If '..ocean-front..' is not a priority, then you might also consider--

WATERLOO HOUSE-- http://www.waterloohouse.com/

located harbour-front, in downtown Hamilton. It is a 'sister-property' to Horizons & Cottage (with the same reciprocal privledges) and shutttle service from Hamilton out to the beach.

An '..attraction' of Waterloo house is that is is a short stroll to all of the other dining and shoppping options of downtown Hamilton...and Hamilton is the nexus for Bermuda's excellent public transportation (buses & ferries) system.

If you have serious personal mobility issues, then regardless of the guest accommodations you select, it would be most PRUDENT, to telephone the property DIRECTLY (follow up and confirm via e-mail if you like, but direct contact is best) and make these issues and concerns known to them. If they know....and there is a choice in room assignments...they may be able to take your issues and concerns into consideration when assigning rooms. But they can't possibly '..know..' (and as a result, with the best will in the world, they may not be able to do) anything about it once you've arrived to check-in and other rooms have already been assigned. At the same time you can confirm what sort of on-site shuttle van or golg-cart services they provide...and in what circumstances.

This www.youtube.com home video '..review..' may give you a better idea of the layout and topography of the ARIEL SANDS property--

Thanks for the replies. Everything you've all said has been really useful. In the end we have opted for the Pink Beach with a room reached by a walkway from the clubhouse, in Hibiscus. We think we can manage to get to the beach ok here too as apparently there are fairly gentle slopes and no steps.
