 Snorkeling at the Reefs

Has anyone tried snorkeling off the beach at the Reefs? Anything to see? I want to introduce our 10 year old daughter to snorkeling when we are there this summer. It looks (from pictures) like the east end of the beach at the Reefs is very protected, and might be a good place to learn.

The eastern end of the beach at The Reefs is as good as it looks in the photos for snorkeling. There is a concentration of broken reef, coral heads and 'boilers' in this area (beginning a relatively short distance from the beach) which is relatively well sheltered and protected. These formations provide a good habitat for marine life and also serv to 'break up' the usually mild to moderate surf. You will probably find that it will be at its calmest around low tide.

for Bonaire, Antigua

I have stayed at The Reefs about 6 times and have snorkeled there. It was nothing memorable but pretty good. MInd you I live in Bonaire where the snorkeling is outrageous. I found Church Bay in Bermuda much better but your 10 year old will enjoy the snorkeling. It is deep water and the coral is out aways vs in the immediate shallows..there is also some wave activity and slight pulls of gentle currents making it a little challenge IMHO.

If you plan to begin a child snorkeling, it's usually a good idea to eliminate some of the more common initial difficulties. Among these is that while there is equipment available at the hotel, especially when it comes to masks and snorkels, proper '..fit..' can make a big difference...so bring along gear for her from home that's been properly fitted. Snorkeling also looks to be just floating about on the surface....but there's a lot more '..work..' to it than there appears to be. With this in mind, a '..bouyancy compensation vest..' is a great way to conserve energy and make the experience more enjoyable.

The Reefs beach/waterfront is the perfect place to teach a youngster how to snorkel.

Clam, plenty of coral, uncrowded with gin clear water to make the most of the experience.

Also, having your own equipment is a good idea, if you plan to do the activity for a prolonged period, the buoyancy vest is an excellent suggestion.

I have just seen US Divers snorkel/fin/mask sets in my local COSTCO for around $40.00. They had kid's sizes.

As for The Reefs snorkeling not being memorable compared to Bonaire, oh well.

I'm sure your 10 year old will have fun.
