Bermuda Forum: Children at The Reefs

 Children at The Reefs

I just read a disturbing report on children at The Reefs. It was posted in July on this Forum’s Bermuda Hotels listings on the left hand side of this page.

Writer warned against staying in the pool area due to an excess number of children there all day and also about children dining after 6:30 in the evening. it was also mentioned that children were in the lounge area long after nite-nite time.

We encountered a bit of this annoyance last year and did complain to management.

I recently read The Reefs new children’s policy and am anxious to know if they (The Reefs) are adhering to their guidelines.

Perhaps the new on-site management will have the fortitude to make sure that guests are not disturbed by children and enforce this new directive for the good of all.

I am not anti-child; I have two of my own and would have never thought of bringing them to a high-end resort until they were at least young adults.

Would any regular posters and recent visitors (daffy) to The Reefs care to comment on their impression of of children at The Reefs?

And if any Reefs staffers happen to be monitoring this website your views would be appreciated.

I'm sure others share my feelings, paying over $500 per day and having to listen to a 12 month old screaming through dinner at 8:00 PM.

And those parents who believe their children are 'good' , never cry, talk loudly or prance arountd the dining room, are sorely misteken. They do not realize that the constant shushing and admonishing is just as disturbing as a crybaby.

Thanks,

Poppa

It is the responsibility of the parent/parents to control their child. But, before everyone starts saying that anytime a child misbehaves, they are not being raised properly is offensive. Being the mother of a special needs child, I have witnessed 1st hand other people saying "you should just smack that child". Knowing that he could disturb others, we didn't travel with him until he was about 11 and able to control himself (except for our yearly visits to Ocean City, MD). My son is ADHD, but what about parents of autistic children. You can't just look at them and know they're autistic. When they lose it, are the parents at fault.

That being said, there are many parents out there that have kids without major issues and do not discipline. They are at fault. But, please don't make blanket statements.

>>>As for ill-behaved children and irresponsible parents--there are inconsiderate people everywhere. Just because you're paying $500/night does not mean you are less inclined to run into idiots.<<<

I'm not sure that unruly children at The Reefs is as pernicious or persistent problem as it may seem. We've never stayed at the hotel...but have visited it quite often over the years either to visit with friends who were guests, stopped for lunch or dinner..or just sometimes for a drink at one of the bars. In all of the visits we've made over the years, I can't really say that children were much or often in evidence. The '..problem..' with the rooms immediately surrounding the small pool deck would be a '..problem..' whether there were children or a group of adults there. It's been my experience and observation that one person's idea of right to peace and queit for $500 per night often runs counter to another's (perhaps an 'idiot') right to '..fun..' for the same amount. The best advice for anyoneconsidering at stay at The Reefs, is to ask for a room assignment as FAR AWAY from the pool deck as possible...if nothing else, the immediate space is an 'shell' that magnifies sound...from whatever source.

And the problem is NOT children. They're only doing what most normal kids do (which tends be be making general nuisances of themselve more often than not). The problem is careless or thoughtless (or just plain LAZY) parents who believe that the world '..owes..' them a '..break..' for bringing their budding prodigies (it's '..other people's kids..' who are the problem) into the world (there may be a cure for cancer amongst them...but most probably Grand Jury indictments will vastly exceed scientific 'break-throughs') They are usually quite ready to '..take..' all and more of the tolerance and understanding that the '..village..' has to offer in helping then raise their children...but NONE of its criticism or censure when they and/or their children grossly abuse it.

I only went to the Reefs for dinner, as most of you know I stayed at CB for my honeymoon...We were pleased to get back to CB, because dinner at the Reefs included 2 tables of screaming babies, and children...I am not blaming the babies or children..I actually love kids, but it did sort of ruin the atmosphere...

What's with all the screaming anyway? Our children were taken to church, restaurants etc from an early age and for the most part behaved very well. But we also expected them to behave at home too which I think is where the problem lies. I don't ever remember them or our friends children doing the screaming which seems to be accepted as normal behavior these days. I can tolerate children who are restless and bored or who speak in a louder tone than we really want to hear. But the screaming is something else!!!

Of course you can avoid most of this if you do what we do and rent a house/cottage/apartment. I've never seen badly behaved children at The Country Squire or The Frog and Onion either. But we go there mostly at lunchtime when perhaps the children are not tired and fractious from being out in the sun all day and out of their normal routine.

Was surprised to see this resurrected - however I will agree w/KDK and Sr65 that the fault is not the children - it is parents who should know better - and some, not all, really do not.

I'm heading for The Reefs in July - I'll let you know how the children's policy is getting along.
