Bermuda Forum: Staying at the Pompano

 Staying at the Pompano

We are so excited to be staying at the Pompano in mid August. We are going back after our honeymoon 23 years ago - with the kids this time! After reading different posts we had a few questions:

1. Is it best to have the cab from the airport stop at Harrington Hundreds on the way to the hotel to pick up drinks, snacks, etc.?

2. Where is the best place to pick up bus passes?

3. Our 20 year old son is really wondering if they truly enforce NO flip flops in the restaurant - and his Dad can't believe that he can wear shorts to dinner. 23 years ago you had to have a jacket and tie! Are shorts really OK?

This site is awesome - we never travel without it!

You could pick up some supplies on the way to Pompano, but you also could easily do that the next day by riding the bus to the little market just west a mile or so on the main road from Pompano. That might be easier. You'll also want to bring along some snack food with you in your luggage, as this can be pricey in Bermuda.

(We usually stash nuts, granola bars, and other snacks in our bags - that way we only have to run out for soda.)

I believe you can get bus-passes at the main desk of your hotel, which would be easiest.

No flip-flops in the dining room is correct - but leather sandals or deck shoes are fine. Although they may say that shorts at dinner are ok, you will not see many. Most men wear Dockers style pants and polo shirts to dinner (but at least no jacket/tie are required.)

Better check again with Pompano regarding the shorts. This is probably ok at breakfast.....not dinner.

You can certainly have the taxi from the airport stop at the Harrington Hundreds market for you to shop...but most people simply like to get to their guest accommodations immediately upon arrival to check-in and get established. In addition to this you will be paying a taxi wait-time while you shop for chips and soft-drinks. These items are already going to be more expensive on Bermuda adding taxi fares. Your best bet will be to stop at either Harrington Hundred (there's a bus stop right there..open until 9 PM Mon-thru-Sat) on your way back from Hamilton...OR... the Marketplace supermarket on the Somerset Rd. (bus stop right there...open until 10 PM Mon-thru-Sat, 1 PM-5 PM on Sun) on your way back from Dockyard after you've arrived.

When you arrive at the airport and are waiting for you luggage to spill out onto the conveyor, you may purchase TRANSPORTATION PASSES from the Tourist Information Desk right there in the Arrival Hall. If not, passes may be available from the front desk at Pompano Beach Club (telephone or e-mail them directly and ask)...otherwise, you will either have to purchase them at the main ferry or bus terminals in Hamilton, Dockyard or Saint George's.

There are plenty of other restaurants on Bermuda where you son can probably wear flip-flops to dinner...and perhaps he will feel more comfortable at these. For the most part, I can't quite understand why wearing foot covering is such an onerous task for an adult ? As for wearing shorts in the dining room at Pompano Beach Club for dinner, your husband may certainly do so.....proper Bermuda shorts and knee socks are perfectly appropriate attire for social or business occasions...but wearing sports shorts and pulling tube socks up as high as they'll go above the sneakers ain't gonna' get it. This is a better dining room...at a better hotel...it ain't a Hooters.

Ziplady - thanks for the reply - the Pompano had told us that shorts were OK, but we wanted to check with folks who had been there to make sure it was "really" OK.

KDKSail - thanks for the information on the transportation passes, and thanks for the insight on proper dress attire in Bermuda. We have not been there for 23 years and realize it has change a lot. In our recent travels to Jamaica, Aruba, Hawaii, Caracus, Captiva and other destinations we have always packed "dinner" dress, which our family wore, but no one else did. We appreciate your advice, however, it could of done without the derogatory comments at the end.

KDKSAIL

It seems like you just can't win these days.

Let me go on the record to say that I totally appreciate your style and don't change a thing. Your sense of humour is one of the main reasons I check in here everyday. Keep it up. You make life interesting.

Regarding shorts:

Absolutely, true "Bermuda Shorts" & knee high socks with dress shoes (that the business men in Bermuda wear) are always acceptable and look smashing! So if your hubby is so inclined, he will look absolutely fabulous!
