Public holidays Aug 1, 2

I just read that August 1st and 2nd are holidays in Bermuda. Will public transportation be running? We will be coming in by cruise and be there on those days. How crowded will the beaches be? Is it a good time to sight see in St. George and Hamilton? Will we be able to rent motor boats or jet ski? Are stores opened? Anything you can tell me about these holidays would be appreciated. Thank you!

Both Thursday, August 1st and Friday, August 2nd are part of the CUP MATCH national holiday weekend. All public transportation will be operating on reduced-service SUNDY & HOLIDAY schedules. Be SURE to pick-up a copy of the printed BUS & FERRY SCHEDULES to refer to, to avoid long wait times. Public transportation reverts to '..regular..' schedules on SATURDAY and then reverts again to SUNDAY & HOLIDAY schedule on SUNDAY. There will also be an official (NOT a '..tourist rip-off) 25%-to-50% surcharge on metered taxi fares on the Thursday & Friday national holidays and Sunday....and available taxis will probably be fewer.

Downtown Hamilton is the government and commercial '..center..' of Bermuda so most stores, shops and offices will be closed...but most bars and restaurants will be open. The 'good news' is that if you're riding rental motor scooters, these are among the relatively few days of the year that it's easy to find a legal parking space downtown.

The beaches will probably be busier than usual as resident Bermudians are more likely to come out to enjoy THEIR national treasures with family and friends for the holidays. Most stores and shops will be closed on holidays but most bars, restaurants, etc. will be open for business as usual...if perhaps a bit busier.

If you want to rent a boat i strongly recommend you call now and book it. cup match is our biggest holiday and all of our summer celebrations are water oriented, meaning there will be huge demand for rental boats. Fantasea is the closest to your ship, located in Dockyard. They have two boats in their rental fleet, call them on 441 236 1300. The next closest is h2o at the Somerset public dock, about 5 minutes in a taxi from Dockyard. Aquatic Bermuda operates from Hamilton, a 25 minute ferry ride from Dockyard. Fantasea and aquatic Bermuda rent power catamarans that have a bathroom and stereo so their boats would be the best choice.

Cup match will be held in st georges this year so it will be quite busy there, so if you want to hang out with us, come on down. If you want to avoid us, then stick to hamilton and the west end.

In addition to H20 WATERSPORTS-- http://www.h2osportsbermuda.com/ -- there's also SOMERSET BRIDGE WATERSPORTS-- http://www.bdawatersports.com/ --located out along Bermuda's western shore (near the Royal Naval Dockyard's King's/Heritage Wharf cruise ship pier) where you can rent small (13'-17') outboard powered (30-35hp), self-drive skiffs.

As noted above, if there's any sort of sunshine and fair weather, every Bermudian with access to a boat will be out on the water with family and friends enjoying the holdiday...so today probably wouldn't be too soon to make a reservation for a boat.
