Inexpensive(but decent) Hotel or Inn?

Hi

We will be traveling to Bermuda for the first time in June 2014. I know I know-thats a ways off. We'll be there for a wedding. But I'd like to a a couple of days either prior to the wedding of after. Where can we stay (just 2 of us) in a decent hotel or inn or cottage for a decent rate?

Thank you

You could take a look at these rental sites, www.bermudarentals.com and www.bermudagetaway.com There are also some B&Bs listed. Also take a look at the column to the left of this page. Various hotels/guesthouses listed there. It would help if we had some idea of what you consider to be a "decent" price. Do you want to be in Hamilton or at the beach? What are you hoping to do in the few extra days?

There are lots of modestly/moderately priced guest accommodations in Bermuda. Most will be at small, usually family owned-operated guesthouses (with & without self-catering facility); B&B's or private rental apartments or cottages. To the best of my knowledge, observation or experience, there are no '..stinkers' among them.

Check out some of these fine options (among others) to see if any seem a '..fit..' for your own preferences, priorities, special needs and budget--

It's also worth noting that the month of June is the most heavily booked period (especially from mid-June-thru-early-July) of the entire year in Bermuda--biannual Newport/Marion)-Bermuda Yacht Race and Bermuda Race Week events & activities, Billfish Big Game Fishing tournaments, destination weddings, honeymoons, end-of-term for schools, general tourism--with many hotels and guest accommodation 100% reserved. With this in mind, try to make your decision and reservations as early as possible to avoid being shut out of your 1st, 2nd or 3rd choices.

If you don't mind self catering, I would take a look at www.homeaway.com and www.vrbo.com also. There are quite a few properties available. If you prefer a hotel or b&b maybe Aunt Neas in St. George's would suit you.

Saint George's is certainly a quaint, quiet, charming and historic area...but it is located at Bermuda's far eastern end...and not exactly '..central..' to the '..rest-of-Bermuda..'. And while the environs of Saint George's are certainly lovely for lazing and relaxing...it may not be the best location to 'base' yourself during this '..occasion..' in Bermuda.

There is excellent public transportation service (termini for 5 public bus routes and 1 'seasonal' public ferry route) from Saint George's to the '..rest of Bermuda..'. The bus rides (though lovely and picturesque) from Saint George's to downtown Hamilton will take approx. 60-65 minutes...then a transfer at the main bus terminal to other public bus routes and additional travel time from downtown Hamilton, onward to other destinations. Even combining public ferry and public bus routes, average travel times will be long-ish. As a rule-of-thumb, taxi fares in Bermuda will run approx. $1 per minute....so taxi fares from Saint George's will tend to run '..expensive..'.

I find St George's to be quite convenient and we prefer staying there over the south shore. Hopping on a bus or ferry gets you all over the island. It's all personal preference though.

I get the impression from the reviews that Aunt Nea's is an acquired taste. It seems to be not exactly a B&B or a hotel. Have you stayed there or had some personal experience of it?

You're absolutely right about personal preference...and Saint George's does have excellent public transportation service (5 public bus routes; 1 'seasonal' public ferry route) but...'travel time' is one factor when you've nothing special to do or go...it's a whole other thing when there are appointments to make and specific places to be at specific times. So unless the wedding venue is somewhere out in the east-end, Saint George's is probably going to be an in-convenient 'base' for this '..occasion..'.

I would say that Aunt Nea's is a simple Inn. We have stayed there a couple times. I prefer self catering but if you want a good spot in St. George's and you don't want to self cater I think that Aunt Nea's is fine. Everyone that works there is very accommodating and sweet.
