Best location to stay

We are a group of four ladies that are visiting bermuda for the first time. We have narrowed our accommodations to two spots , one close to Flatts Village and one in the heart of St George about a mile from Tobacco Beach and Fort Catherine beaches. Which location is better for access to walking to services such as restaurants and grocery stores as well as beaches and transportation.

Thanks for your help

Saint George's will be more convenient / easy strolling/walking distances to restaurants, stores, supermarket, etc....though most first time visitors find the more '..central..' areas--Paget, Warwick, Southampton best for getting out 'n about, with best access to Bermuda's magnificent south shore beaches

Haven't stayed in the Flatts but St. George's is our location of choice. There are bus and ferry stops in town. There is a supermarket and quite a few restaurants. Tobacco Bay / St. Catherine's beach are lovely as well.

If you are staying in either location try to make sure that you have easy access to the bus. I'm assuming that you will be renting and some rentals in both locations can involve some hill climbing. After the middle of April and until the middle of November you will have access to a ferry from St George's as well as the bus.

What time of year are you going?

It's also very easy to get to the south shore beaches by bus from St. George's. We stayed in Warwick last time around and regretted not staying in St. George's.

The '..olde towne..' Saint George's, located at Bermuda's far east-end, is the original colonial capital. It's a small, quaint, historic village/town. There are a few restaurants and pubs in town, some shops and a small SOMERS MARKET supermarket-- http://www.supermart.bm/Somers_Supermart.htm --(at Duke of Kent & Duke of York Sts) in town. Just about everywhere in Saint George's is '..walkable..' from everywhere else in town.

The small beaches on the north shore of Saint George's--TOBACCO BAY, ACHILLES BAY, SAINT CATHERINE'S BEACH--are small and pleasant. The shore here is well protected by the broad, offshore barrier reef system so the water here will tend to be flat/calm/no surf. Since cruise ships seldom berth at Saint George's, these beaches will tend to be uncrowded.

There are five(5) public bus routes that service Saint George's (#1, #3, #10 & #11--Saint George's-Hamilton...#6--Saint George's Saint David's) and '..seasonal..' (mid-April-thru-mid-November) ORANGE--Saint George's-Dockyard-Hamilton public ferry service. Travel time by bus between Saint George's and downtown Hamilton will average 60-65 mins....out to the south shore beaches will require a transfer (bus/bus) in downtown Hamilton or at Dockyard (ferry/bus) and take approx. 75-90 mins.

I vote for St George too, lovely little town. Flatt's is also good and picturesque but is not a town in the way that St George is. I love all the little lanes and alleys, so pretty with all the flowering hedges and the houses built higgledy piggledy. Many are several hundred years old. People get hung up about the lack of shopping etc when they visit for a few hours but when you actually stay in the town you feel differently about it. More time to wander about, get to know some of the people.
