Buying wine in Bermuda

We'll be staying at the Fairmont Southampton and I wanted to know of a store where we can buy wine and cheese? Also, do the buses stop running in the evening or can we get back from a restaurant to the Southampton by bus? We're going on a package with Westjet - do those gratuities apply even with a package? Thank you.

It depends entirely on the not-so-minor-details of what is--and is not--included in your WestJet package. So best to consult/query the particular details of the '..package..' you've purchased. My guess is that unless the details of the specifically include these charges/fees (what about the 9.5% Gov't. Hotel Tax & Tourism Fund Fee ??)...thay aren't included. With tour packagers it's always prudent that unless a something is specifically noted...the cost is on you.

Www.bermuda-online.org is the best website for everything you will need to know for your trip including schedules and shopping. The concierge is also very helpful. Bus service depends on the day you are travelling. We were there this week and would take the free Fairmont ferry into Hamilton for dinner and a taxi home. Taxi was around $25. For fine dining be sure to try Ascots in Hamilton! Have a great time. Beats 20 below!

Thank you so much for the wealth of information you both sent. We will try to get a transportation pass for the week so that we don't need exact change each time we travel. I emailed the transport dept. and was told that the Fairmont Southampton has bus passes for sale. Thanks again.

Hi there, that's a great list of supermarkets. I'm staying at the Newstead Belmont Hills, which one would be closest to use. We can take the hotel ferry across to Hamilton if that's easier than walking to one on the Newstead side?

In terms of simple distance, the A-1 GOURMET on Middle Road (at: Valley Road) or MODERN MART on South Road (at: Saint Michael's Rd) will be the closest to Newstead-Belmont Hills..BUT...it will be a bit of a hike up over hill 'n dale to get to 'em afoot.

A-1 GOURMET & MODERN MART Locations--

www.marketplace.bm/marketplace/locations.jsp

In practical terms....the most convenient supermarket(s) to N-BH are probably going to be those located across the harbor in downtown Hamilton. The '..closest..' of these will probably be the MILE'S MARKET, located just to the west (to your right as you face Hamilton Harbour) of the Main Ferry Terminal and the dock for N-BH's private ferry....west along Front St./Pitt's Bay Road approx. 500 yards (past Barr Park and '..Whale's Tai..'l fountain). Mile's is tucked back in (not just an idle expression) down an alleyway, behind the 'WATERFORNT' office/condo complex (across the road from the Mies Van Der Rohe, BACARDI HQ building...take off your shoes and walk on the grass). Mile's Market is about as close as you get to a '..gourmet market..' in Bermuda....and has the best prepared Foods, Deli, Bakery, Desserts sections in Bermuda. You can pick up the fixin's for a positively wonderful picnic luncheon or dinner here. The Liquor department also has a good selection of table wines in 'half-bottles' and champagnes in 'splits'.

MILE'S MARKET--

http://www.miles.bm/Miles/index.html

The other downtown Hamilton supermarkets will be located up near the Main Bus Terminal in downtown Hamilton (Next to City Hall, on Washington St....btwn: Church & Victoria Sts.). The HAMILTON MARKETPLACE will be located, approx. 400 yards east (to your left as you face the harbor) along Church Street (at: Brunswick st)....The SHOPPING CENTRE will be located approx. 400 yards east along Victoria Street (nr: Burnaby St.).

HAMILTON MARKETPLACE & SHOPPING CENTRE Locations--

All of these supermarkets will be reasonably convenient to you when making your way out 'n about, to/from N-BH via public transportation--bus or ferry.
