King's Wharf is in the Dockyard at the West end of the island. There are shops, restaurants, a museum, snorkel area, dolphins etc. Buses will be available to take you to the beaches. Ferries will take you into Hamilton. Take a look at the column at the left side of this page. Lots of info to browse through.

From a GOOGLE search:

King's Wharf, Bermuda's third port -- and the port of choice for bigger ships -- is often referred to as the West End or the Royal Naval Dockyard. Built for the British Navy between 1814 and 1863 as a base to launch a raid on Washington, D.C. by thousands of convicts from prison ships, it was once dubbed "Gibraltar of the West".

There are a few shops and pubs/restaurants as well as Dolphin Quest and the Bermuda Glassworks open for demonstrations and sales of handmade glass items.

It is an enjoyable place to visit....have fun.

KINGS WHARF is located within the Royal Naval Dockyard complex at Bermuda's far western tip. There is access to downtown Hamilton via the public ferry from its stop at the end of the pier (a very pleasant 25 mins) and via public bus (a very pleasant 60 mins) from the bus stop there. There is also public ferry service from DOCKYARD to the old town of SAINT GEORGE'S at Bermuda's far-eastern end (60 mins). There will also be public bus service (#7-Dockyard-Via South Shore Beaches-Hamiltom to Bermuda's magnificent south shore beaches (35 mins to Horseshoe Bay; 50 mins to Elbow Beach with many others in-between).

As noted, there are some things to do within the Dockyard complex---shops, Maritime Museum, Dolphin Quest

Given that you have such a brief stay in Bermuda, you really should make the most of your time by familiarizing yourself with Bermuda beforehand. With this in mind, contact the Bermuda Dept. of Tourism offices (in Toronto of all places) at 1-800-BERMUDA (237-6832..I really HATE '..cute..' telephone numbers) and ask them to send you a Bermuda Vacation planning packet. One of the items contained within this packet will be the '..BERMUDA-Handy Reference Map..' which will be great to help you figure out where things are. In the interim, you can use the maps provided at the BDA Dept. of Torism web site--

The other thing that you should do is check out the routes and schedules for the public buses and ferries at--

If renting a motorscooter for the day is in your plans, then make a pre-reservation with OLEANDER CYCLES, which has a rental shop location within the Dockyard compex. Oleander is a first-rate operation with first rate equipment & service. A pre-reservation will insure that there is a scooter waiting for you when you arrive, speed up the rental formalities and should also get you a 10% discount off of their regular rates--

What beaches are nearby that are really nice and close by for something to eat?

You can eat in the Dockyard complex, not necessary to go to a beach.

>>>What beaches are nearby that are really nice and close by for something to eat?<<<

Not entirely sure what this means. Bermuda's pink beaches are certainly prettier than most...but the sand really doesn't taste any better for it.

If you're looking for beaches to visit for the usual aquatic activities, then any of the magnificent south shore beaches served by the #7-Doackyard-Via South Shore Beaches-Hamilton bus route will do quite nicely. If I had to pick just one..then that would probably be WARWICK LONG BAY, which will be 35-38 mins by bus from Dockyards and then perhaps 50-75 yards down to the beach. There is a concessionaire here that rents beach chairs, umbrellas and snorkeling equipment...and sells basic beverages & snacks.

If what you're looking for is a pleasant spot for luncheon with an ocean view...then it will be difficult to beat COCONUTS restaurant at The Reefs Hotel (also along the #7 bus route). COCONUTS is a covered deck, built into the living rock, poised a few feet off of the sand and back from the surf. There's a palm tree that grows up through deck and roof....with wonderful beach and ocean views. This is a popular spot for hotel guests, local residents and other tourists...so telephone ahead for a reservation...unless you plan on a late lunch (after 1:30-2:00 or so).

Though not really ocean view...another great spot for luncheon is the pub at HENRI VIII restaurant...and for good basic '..pub grup..' there's the SWIZZLE INN location along the same South Road. If you're in the mood for good pizza, there's TIO PEPE's (if you're riding a rental motorscooter, you can leave the beach, make a run to Tip Pepe's for a pizza (small pizza boxes will fit in most scooter baskets) and make the run back to your spot on the beach and it will still be burn-your-mouth hot.

We like the Frog and Onion in the Dockyard. Not close to a beach though, unless you count the beach in the Snorkel Park.

You really need to bear in mind that the Dockyard compex is certainly a fine place to spend a 1/2 day and perhaps have lunch at one of the restaurants there---IF---you have a week or so to spend on Bermuda. Otherwise, as soon as the gangway makes contact with the wharf...get the hell outta' there on the first bus, ferry or rental motorscooter leaving and get out 'n about in '..the rest of Bermuda..'.
