Anguilla vs. St. John

Hey guys - how does Anguilla compare to St. John? I've never been to Anguilla but I know I love St. John. Any input? thanks

Anguilla is flat, arid & scrubby; not lush at all. It has 33 beaches with blinding white, powdery sand and turquoise water. No casinos, no cruise ships, no shopping to speak of. Just beaches & restaurants -- we love it there but it's not for everyone.

I love them both, but they are completely different.

The beaches in Anguilla are blinding, the water is so bright. It has some of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean. Anguilla has some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean. It is also one of the most expensive islands to visit. There is no shopping, not much in the way of night life. Island hopping there gives you completely different island experiences:St Martin is a 20 minute ferry away, with shopping, activities, casinos, hills, european flair, and St. Barts is about an hour from that, ultra upscale, chic, well, french. Saba, also a day trip, is all mountain, no beaches, but complete Caribbean feel. The people in Anguilla are probably the nicest in the Caribbean, although that's changing with all the construction going on. They are sceduled to open a Greg Norman golf course by next spring, and another golf course is in the works. The newer resorts are getting more and moe upscale. It is an expensive destination, but those beaches are spectacular. Not much to snorkel.

St. John has better snorkeling, and a more Caribbean vibe. The overall scenary there is spectacular, and it has more activities. It has a little bit of shopping. Island hopping there, while the Virgins each have their own flair, are more similar to each other. the restaurants are okay, and definately more reasonably priced. The beaches are beautiful, but not the blinding white sand and swimming pool water of Anguilla.

St John is a good "all around" island, with hiking, mountainous, pretty beaches, island hopping.

Thanks for your observations - very helpful. We are starting to research our first trip to the Caribbean, and your post helped us figure out what we want and don't want. Thanks!
