Help, Trying to plan a Honeymoon!

Hi,

So I'm trying to plan my honeymoon, which very, very near, and I'm a little overwhelmed with information. We'd be leaving New England on May 28th, and returning by June 3d at the latest, but preferably the 2d. (So that's 4-6 nights.) We really want to do something that's not quite in our character for our honeymoon; something that we probably wouldn't ever do again. (we're in our mid-20's, by the way)

I am thinking about some sort of luxury place in the Caribbean, but there are so many islands and I know so little about them I'd love some advice sorting things out. I'm new to the site, but am surprised that there's not a dedicated honeymoon section. (if i'm missing it, please someone point me in the right direction.)

I I think that the upper limit of my budget would be something like a private villa on Mustique, which seems to be fabulously luxurious, and sure to be a unique experience. I am worried about two things though: first, 4k is quite a lot for a week's worth of loging, and second, ideally, there would be a local town or area we could explore when not on the beach.

I also looked at some resorts on Anguilla, but wasn't sure what to make of them. Does anyone have some particularly good experiences we luxurious-feeling, beachside accomodations near some culture that won't cost an arm and a leg (but maybe just an arm?) The whole thing is going to be a surprise for my fiancee and i want her to be really surprised- i don't think she'd expect something really fancy.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Anguilla

Anguilla is primarily about beaches (33+) and restaurants (85+) -- there's no "town" to speak of and not much to do but eat & veg. Cap Juluca is one of the top honeymoon spots in the world but, again, exploring is pretty much limited to other beaches.

If you want to spend your days relaxing on a beautiful beach and eat at outstanding restaurants, Anguilla is your choice.

There are probably many destinations in the Caribbean that might fit your needs. It depends on what you are looking for in an island as well.

Since it is your honeymoon and you want something luxurious I would look at some of the great resorts on Anguilla and Turks and Caicos. We have been to both islands and found some great places on both.

Both of these islands have absolutely amazing crystal clear water.

Some resorts to consider:

Anguilla: Cap Juluca was our favorite- it is very romantic and you can get a great villa suite there! No pool to speak of but the beach is so stunning you can't go wrong here. (two other resorts on Anguilla that are nice are CuisinArt and Malliohana) There is the town you can check out and also St martin is a short ferry ride away if you wanted to see somewhere different for a day trip.

Turks and Caicos: we loved Parrot Cay- for your honeymoon you can do one of the beach villas-they looked great!! (only negative with Parrot Cay is that you are on a private island so your requirement to explore local areas couldn't happen.)

There are several luxury accomodations on Provo that you might like as well.

Good Luck!

I'm a little past picking honeymoon spots, but I've been to most of the islands that you might consider and actually own property on one of them. I go there a lot. I would pick St Barths without any hesitation. The whole idea of any honeymoon is to make it totally special and something to remember for the rest of your lives. St Barths is just such a place.

It's like going to the South of France, but much closer. The beaches are beautiful, and secluded if that's what you want. If you want to be around people, then you can do that too. It's got great restaurants, (Hey, it's French - What would you expect?) romantic small boutique hotels, and it's safe and easy to explore. Just rent a car and go! Gustavia is full of French shops and restaurants and is made to walk around and explore. You really feel like you're in Europe. You're not stuck in your hotel with no place to go, and you're not reduced to just going to the beach everyday. I really like Anguilla also, but believe it or not, you will get lots of chances to go to islands that resemble Anguilla, or T&C in your future life. You will only get one chance at a honeymoon and St Barths is where I would do it.

Try Guanahani or Isle De France Hotels. If these are out of your budget, try Saline Gardens near Saline Beach or Francois Plantation.

We just spent a week at Rendezvous Bay Hotel on Anguilla and very much enjoyed it. Price-wise it's among the lowest few, but it's got Tropical Island Character and maybe the best beach. Actually, we enjoyed Anguilla as a whole very much. (Unfortunately, RBH is being closed permanently in August for development of luxury condo/villas.)

There are just a very few "hotels" in the under $300/night range, then they jump dramatically up to $500+, even off season.

What do you mean by "culture"? If you need "things to do", though, Anguilla may be a little too easy-going. You are on your honeymoon after all (wink wink).
