 Ku or Shoal Bay Villas?

We have been researching our next vacation destination and are thinking about going to anguilla. It sounds like an amazing destination and also very quiet and relaxing. The two hotels we are intrested in are the Ku and Shoal bay villas. What are the pros and cons of both? They sound very nice, and would fit our needs perfectly. Any other advice is welcome! Thanks so much

There was a recent thread about this on anguillaforum.com -- the consensus was that it's a toss-up. They are right next to each other on one of the most spectacular beaches in the Caribbean. Ku has a beach bar but, again, they're right next door. I would pick by price (Ku had some amazing deals on Luxurylink last fall -- haven't checked lately but it was $900/wk). Whatever you choose, rent a car & see some of the other 35 beaches & enjoy the 80-90 restaurants on the island. You'll love it.

We are on the island now. Met some people last night staying at Ku who unfortunately go the meal plan deal. They were not happy with the restaurant at all because the service was very poor and the restaurant was out of many items; for instance the only dessert available at this time is ONE flavor of ice cream. They said they would go back and just use the resort as a bed to sleep in and rent a car to get around to restaurants.

I would never advise anyone to take a meal plan at any of the resorts -- the restaurants of Anguilla are toooooo amazing!

I agree meal plans are just not a good idea on

Anguilla. Sometimes people do like to take breakfast in the hotel they are staying at and the report is that service in the restaurant is almost nonexistant--at all meals including breakfast. For instance, it is extremely difficult to even get a cup of coffee.

Drove by Ku today and it looks very nice--pool, small gym and attractive grounds on Shoal Bay, which is pretty busy (for Anguilla). Did not have time to look over Shoal Bay Villas.

We made our first trip to Anguilla last year, and considered both Ku and SBV. At that time SBV was a couple of hundred dollars less expensive. We felt during our planning the SBV was more responsive to our questions and concerns, for that reason we chose SBV and were very pleased with our choice. Will be returning there this summer as well. SBV has a restuarant next door called the Sandpiper which is opened between 8-8:30 till 4PM(forget which day it's closed), and the food is just fine for breakfast or lunch. The only thing about SBV which surprised us was that they didn't supply coffee in the room, so you either need to bring some or pick some up when you arrive. They do however provide "2" quart bottles of water everyday.

One more thing, in case you have concerns in regard to the interenet, most don't know that SBV does have internet "dial up" in the rooms if you have a laptop. If you've forgotten how to configure that, they'll do it for you. The Ku does have a small store with a computer in it, not sure if they charge or not.

My husband and I have called SBV home each time we've been to Anguilla and LOVE IT!!! I'm almost reluctant to share this information but in the spirit of love which we've increased every time we've vacationed here, you can't go wrong with either property considering their location on the beach. Dazzling views of the bay from all upstairs units at SBV. Monica and Kathy are amazing and will take care of ANYTHING you need during your stay at SBV. It's lovely having a full kitchen with microwave as you'll eat a fair amount of leftover dinners for breakfast and lunch given the portion size of almost every restaurant on the island. SBV is a really tranquil enviroment with a nice pool when you want to take a late night or early morning dip. I agree with MaryGG about the restaurants, there some many of them with wonderful food: Straw Hat, Zara's Deon's Overlook, George's at Cap Juluca, Johnno's, Hibernia, I could go on and on.....Ku's decor is very South Beach and you can have dinner at their restaurant. Shoal Bay Villas is an older simpler property that has undergone recent renovations with more traditional Caribbean decor. The gardens of the property are beautifully maintained. Ku has it's own little grocery store which is nice, but guess what, if you opt for SBV you can always walk next door. Another tip, take a look at prior postings for great information about this very special island. Have a glorious holiday!!
