Drive tour next summer

As part of our drive tour next August we will be driving from San Francisco to LA and are making a detour to Sequoia and Kings canyon.Having visited many of your other national parks in the past.

My question is if we only want to see the main sights where should we plan to visit and what places would be best to overnight in.We are in the early stages of planning so any help would be great.

Not sure how much time in you have for the "detour", nor what y.ou enjoy doing and your activity level. I'd spend 3 -5 days Kings Canyon could be one-two day. There is hiking and a cave that you can take a tour of. Sequoia would be the balance. If you've been to our western parks you'll know to follow the guidance on keeping food in bear lockers vs your car. Once in the park ,buy a good map and take some of the trails . Many are marked easy to moderate an it is worth getting away from the crowds to enjoy the forest and trees. Grants Grove and Giant Forest are two highlights. I'd stay in the lodge inside the park. look under the park newletter for more detailed info The NPS webiste has good maps but today they seem to have broken links...keep trying...they worked a few weeks ago.

We did the reverse trip this summer (LA to SF) and stayed in Three Rivers on the south side of the park. That may be a good alternative for your last night there as you would then have an easy drive to LA since you would already be through all the winding mountain roads at the entrance/exit to the park on the south side. A few places not mentioned previously that are not to be missed: "Moro rock" as the views are great & we really liked all the visitor centers and musuems in the park (they also give you a great perspective of just how big the giant trees are when seen next to the man made structures). There are also some great places for a picnic at the edge of the rivers (with picnic benches right at the waters edge and parking within a 100' of same). Hope you enjoy the park as much as we did as it was our favorite stop on the entire vacation
