Access to Kings Canyon/Sequoia NP

Is it possible to access these parks from the east as we will be coming from Death Valley area? If not do we head south and around the bottom of Seq. NP?

There are no roads that enter Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP from the east, similar to Tioga Road in Yosemite NP. The only entrances to Sequoia/Kings Canyon are on the west side of the parks, specifically Highway 198 from Visalia, or Highway 180 from Fresno.

Depending on your starting and ending points, the drive from Death Valley NP to Sequoia NP is about 360 miles (576 km) with about 7 hours of driving time plus time spent at stops along the way.

One possible stop along the way is Lone Pine, where you can visit the picturesque Alabama Hills just 5 minutes west of Lone Pine, and have a view of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the United States except Alaska.

Death Valley to Lone Pine is about a 2-hour drive. Lone Pine to Sequoia NP is about 5 hours of driving plus time spent at stops.

I saw in another thread that this trip will be in early May. Although Tioga Pass thru Yosemite is the popular mountain crossing for visitors, it rarely is open in early May due to snow. A list of Tioga Pass opening dates at this link:

www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tiogaopen.htm

Assuming Tioga Pass has not opened at the time of your trip, you will need to drive south around the mountains then back north to reach Sequoia. That would be using Highway 395 south, then either Highway 178 or Highway 58 to Bakersfield and back north to Sequoia.
