Sequoia trees

Traveling north on hwy 99 next weekend. What is the easiet and/or fasted way to get a look at the Sequoia trees? Only have a few hours to spare on our way to/thru Fresno. It would be okay if we only got a glimpse, but wondered if there was a way to see them without a half day trip involved. Thanks!

There are several choices:

Giant Sequoia National Monument, east of Porterville, California (and the northern section is east of Fresno). americansouthwest.net/california/giant-sequo…

Sequoia National Park, east of Visalia, California. http://www.nps.gov/seki/index.htm

Kings Canyon National Park, east of Fresno, California. also http://www.nps.gov/seki/index.htm

The Grant Grove in Kings Canyon NP is about a 1-hour drive on Highway 180 east of Fresno. It contains the General Grant tree, the third-largest tree in the world (by volume). It is beautifully situated in its grove with paved trails winding through the grove. That is a very popular and sometimes crowded grove, but possibly the easiest to get to for you.

If you wanted to take a drive through the park, you could take Hwy 198 from Visalia and then connect up with Hwy 180 in the park - that will take you down into Fresno where you could pick up Hwy 99 again. This detour would take about 3.5 hours as opposed to 30 minutes from Visalia to Fresno on Hwy 99 - so in effect, it will add 3 hours worth of driving to the route. This would take you right through the park, so you could stop off at Giant Forest and Grant Grove along the way.

Another option would be to take Hwy 180 east from Fresno and go just to Grant Grove - this is about a 60-90 minute drive from Hwy 99. So you are looking at a 2-3 hour detour - so somewhat less time than the first option.
