Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks have declared Stage 2 fire restrictions starting Monday July 1 2013 due to the high risk of wildfires from drought conditions. The limits will be in effect until further notice, probably sometime in the Fall.
The move bans wood fires and barbecues in campgrounds and picnic areas located below 6,000 feet elevation. Fires and barbecues are also banned in wilderness and backpacking areas.
Propane or gas stoves are still allowed.
The open fire ban applies to campgrounds in the foothill areas including South Fork, Potwisha, and Buckeye. The ban also applies to the campgrounds in Cedar Grove (Sentinel, Sheep Creek, Canyon View, and Moraine)
Campgrounds still allowing wood fires or barbecues are those in the Grant Grove area (Azalea, Sunset and Crystal Springs); Mineral King area (Atwell Mill and Cold Springs); as well as at Lodgepole and Dorst.
Additionally, smoking is only allowed in designated areas near park buildings or in an enclosed vehicle (do not throw it out the window when finished!)
