How to get there in winter

Hello All,

Does anyone know which is the best way to get to the Park during winter (from Los Angeles by car)?

We have read that the only way is route no 198 because other roads will be closed. But another website was saying route no 180 will be open as well.

Many tks for your reply!

Highway 180 will close temporarily after periods of heavy snow, but will open back up again as soon as the Park Service can get it plowed. This is a welcome change compared to last year when 180 was closed for the entire winter season. However, 180 may remain closed for days at a time so it is best to plan ahead and make sure the road you intend to use is open. You can call the NPS road/weather hotline 24 hours a day at 559-565-3341, or 559-565-4257 (this second number is a temporary information line as they are currently having problems with the regular 3341 number).

Coming from LA though, the most direct route into the park is via Highway 198, so that would be the best way for you to go. Regardless of which road you use to enter the park, please keep in mind that snow chains are required to be carried in all vehicles entering the park and may be needed at any time.

Something else worth mentioning is that a number of roads within Sequoia and Kings Canyon do close seasonally for the winter. Namely the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway which runs down into the canyon itself, the road to Crystal Cave, and the Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow road. You should still be able to access Giant Forest coming in on 198, and Grant Grove coming in on 180, and be able to travel back and forth between the two parks (conditions permitting).

Thank you both for the great advise (though I was not the one who asked) What lodge is the best choice in winter?
