4 families...Orange County to Sequoia...trip planning ???

Hello.......we have a trip planned for "family camp" at the Montecito Sequoia Lodge in mid August. There are four families going (everybody has their own car) and the children range in age from 4 to 10. We are looking to stay some place along the way for a night, but not just to shorten the car-time for the kids, but to actually have some fun.

We were thinking of driving from O.C. to either Pismo Beach/San Luis Obispo, or possibly even to Cambria or San Simeon to visit Heart Castle. If we make one of these our first day/night stop.....does it make it difficult to get to Sequoia/Kings Canyon via highways/freeways?

If we decide to head more inland....straight through Bakersfield.....are there any river rafting/floating options still available in mid August that would be ok for young kids?

Does anybody have any other destinations for our day/night stop?

Thanks in advance!

It really depends on how comfortable you are taking back roads from Cambria to Sequoia. The 41 to the 198 will take you about 4.5-5 hours to Montecito Sequoia Lodge.

I think it's probably too late in the summer for raft trips around Three Rivers - and I can't think of any flowing bodes of water near Bakersfield - maybe somebody else knows of something (a water park, maybe?) Even when available, Three Rivers is class 4+ rapids, so maybe not for kids. There's a lake there, though - perhaps there are boat rentals.

Magic Mountain has a water park.

Mid-August limits the options on rivers but there may still be a few. Using highway 180 from Fresno to Grant Grove to Montecito instead of using highway 198 provides a few possibilities.

Canoe tours are offered by Fresno's San Joaquin River Parkway Conservation Trust in August and September on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Just south of Fresno, the Kings River Conservancy has weekend float trips thru August. Unfortunately the mid-August trip is fully booked, but they are taking a wait list.

There is also Kellys Beach on the Kings River near Reedley. They offer a bus ride up river then a float back to the campground. I haven't been there in a couple of years to comment about the conditions/atmosphere. Prices and contact info about 1/2 way down at:

There are also water parks as CookieDartmouth mentioned. There are 2 waterparks in the Fresno area.
