Las Vegas to Yosemite via Kings Canyon or Death Valley?

We are hiring an RV to travel from LAs Vegas to Yosemite on October20/21/22. Trying to decide which way to go.Via Death Valley, up through Tioga Pass, or through Kings Canyon. What do you think would be the best route. We are 4 (Autralian) adults so the long drives won't phase us.From Yosemite we go to San Francisco so perhaps we should change the order we go in?

Hi

Definitely not a one day drive between Las Vegas and Yosemite with an RV either via Seki or via Tioga Pass. In october there's a chance Tioga pass will be (temporarily) closed due to snow. With TIoga pass open I'd take that route staying one night in Death Valley, second night in Bishop/Mammoth Lakes or lee Vining and 3rd day to Yosemite for at least 2 nights.

Here is a basic map of the area: nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/upload/region.pdf It can help you to see that there isn't an east-west 'through Kings Canyon' route, which sounds like something you want.

Death Valley is much easier to drive through.

Tet's itinerary is great. Here is an article with ideas about where to stay in an RV: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g28926-c151535 You need campsite reservations in Yosemite, especially with an RV.

I assume you are renting an RV because you love being close to nature. Then spend more time in nature and less time in the cities. If you just want to get from Las Vegas to SF fairly quickly (a few days), rent a car.

As above, you don't cross the Sierras into Kings Canyon. There is no access to that park from the east side.

From Las Vegas, the alternative route is through the south, via Bakersflield.

You can actually do both Death Valley and Sequoia NP. Leave Vegas and head to DV by way of Pahrump. Stay 1 night in DV.

Exit DV at the Ridgecrest exit the 190 and head to 58 by way of the 14. The 58 will take you on your way to Bakersfield and Sequoia. Depending on the size of the RV will determine what entrance you can use for Sequoia. From Sequoia head to Yosemite

You'll miss 395 and Tioga pass then. The drive into Seki via 198 has 300 curves. Not recommended with an RV . Instead 58 and 14 you also can take ca178 (Kern River) 178 is very scenic via Lake Isabella to Bakersfield.

I assume that you are renting an RV to be able to stay in it rather than for the joy of driving it on winding roads. So that will allow you to use camp sites in the state and national parks, which could be a lot of fun. That time of year is at the end of the aspen autumn color in the Sierras, but you may find fall color at a campground along the eastern slope of the range above 395 as you go from Death Valley to Tioga Pass. Get a list of the California state parks campgrounds. Many of the campgrounds are on small lovely lakes set against the silver granite peaks, and all are either near a resort or a short drive into a town for meals and supplies.
