Where to stay near Sequoia National Park?

Me and my girlfriend wanted to visit Sequoia National Park for a day during our upcoming trip to California. We will be staying in LA then driving up to San Fran. Rather than do the drive all in one go we wanted to visit the Park and stay in a nearby town/city afterwards.

Can anyone recommend somewhere nice to visit?. Fresno maybe or Visalia? Anywhere worth seeing on the way to SF?,

I can't think of anything I personally find appealing in between Sequoia and San Francisco. There are motel and cabin accomodations in Three Rivers, which is the closest place to the park. It's still at least 1.5 hours into the park from there. Wuksachi Lodge, in the park, is the best place to stay.

Visalia has chain hotels and would be the next closest place to stay. Exeter, a sort of suburb of Visalia, would be a bit closer. Neither has any sort of real tourist infrastructure or attraction. It is by far better to stay in the park if at all possible.

It's about 5.5 hours from Los Angeles to Sequoia. If you left in the morning from L.A., you'd be in Visalia around 1 or 2 pm - what would you the rest of that day? If you plan to go up to the park, you'll get two or three hours before dark and then have to make that long trip back down the mountain to Visalia just to sleep.

Kings Canyon has some less expensive accomodations (cabins)- see their park page for details. Any accomodation in the park would be preferable to staying in Visalia, in my view.

There are two routes into and out of Sequoia:

The road out of Three Rivers is windy, twisty, and crazy driving - we did it in October in the fog. Three Rivers is a small community with motels and lodges by a river.

The easier drive into Sequoia is highway 180 - its out of Fresno.

I would probably recommend staying at Oakhurst or going to Chukchansi.

Oakhurst is by a nice lake area; small town; restaurants; we liked the rooms at the Best Western as they have wonderful hand painted pictures of Yosemite on the wall. Chukchansi is a large Indian gaming casino - the food there is good; we did not play much as it was super crowded over Thanksgiving - but if interested, there is a large gaming area.

Both are a little bit out of the way - http://i.e.about 30 to 40 miles one way to get to them and back the next day. However the area is interesting. There

Chukchansi is a very nice resort, they have recently added a spa and and indoor and outdoor pools there. There is also a Shilo and Best Western in Oakhurst. Nearby is Bass Lake, where there is the Pines Resort, http://www.basslake.com is a nice website for this area. We have stayed many times at the Pines Resort in their spa suites. Have fun! :)

I always stay at the Buckeye Tree Lodge in Three Rivers.

It sits right on the river. If you're going in the late Spring or early summer when the snow melts, that river is running full blast. It's louder than waves crashing on the beach. Phenomenal experience! If you decide to stay here, get a room right on the grass at the edge of the river.

Thanks, I looked at the cabins but think there are motel rooms too. It looked like a great place to stay. We are doing our only long drive from Joshua Tree to 3 Rivers--I am guessing 6-7 hours, ugh!

Three Rivers feels more like Seqouia than Oakhurst does. You're not too far from the lower visitor center, and the Indian archaeological sites at the foot of the mountain.

Being on the river and close to the entrance will allow us to get a good start as well! Thanks.
