Help to Plan a visit Rocky Mountain National Park

Hi,

We are planning to visit Rocky Mountain National Park in a weekend in April or May. We will be coming from SFO and plan to fly in and then drive.

Can anyone suggest a good time to visit, place to stay, driving path...in general a tour plan? Would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Subhasish

Welcome to the forums. If you look to the upper right corner, the blue box that reads "More about Rocky Mountain National Park" has lots of information. If you want to get the most out of the park you'd want to drive Trail Ridge Road, which will be closed in April and most of May. It typically opens the last weekend in May. But the park is a great place to visit even when the road is closed.

There's lots of information on the Park's website: www.nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/index.htm

Many visitors stay in Estes Park. You can find lodging info by searching the forum, or by visiting this site: http://www.estesparkcvb.com/lodging.cfm

Most people prefer to visit RMNP after Trail Ridge Road (Highway 34) is open as a through road between Estes Park and Grand Lake. The opening of Trail Ridge Road is completely weather dependent. The park service aims to have the road open by the Friday of Memorial Day weekend which is May 24, 2013.

RMNP is a great place to visit at any time of year. Over to your right in Top Questions, see "What is a good itinerary for a day trip to RMNP in the winter?" This itinerary will also work for April and May before TRR is completely open. Barring some really unusually dry and warm weather, there will still be snow at Bear Lake into late April and even later in May. Trail Ridge Road is usually open to Rainbow Curve on the east side by late April.

April and May are great times to see wildlife (elk, deer, big horn sheep) in RMNP. Spring snowfalls are common into April especially at higher elevations. Here is a link to the RMNP newspaper for Spring 2012. This will give you an idea of what to expect.

Bear Lake Road Reconstruction will be continuing. It is too soon to know about delays for April and May. Currently, there are really no delays.

To explore the east side of RMNP, you want to stay in Estes Park. See www.estesparkcvb.com for lodging summaries and links to websites. You can check reviews here on TA at

There are numerous lodging options including hotels, condos, cabins, vacation rentals and B&B's. Tell us what you want for lodging and we can make suggestions. Peak season rates do not start until around mid-June so you should be able to get a good deal in April or May. There are many options for Estes Park at www.vrbo.com as well.

When you have had time to review the above information, feel free to ask more questions.
