Temporary closure Trail Ridge Road

Temporary closure Trail Ridge Road

This morning from Rocky Mountain National Park:

The closure points on Trail Ridge are at Rainbow Curve on the east side, which is at treeline about 12 miles from Beaver Meadows & Fall River entrances, and at Milner Pass, the Continental Divide, on the west side, about 16 miles from the Grand Lake entrance. It's pretty soupy here at HQ: foggy, socked in, rainy, 51º. Up top it's icy, snowy, slushy, poor visibility. You never know what September weather can do in the mountains! ks

1. Re: Temporary closure Trail Ridge Road

From my reply yesterday to a poster on the Grand Lake forum -" I will not be surprised if there are some delayed openings or temporary closures based on this forecast. Trail Ridge Road will most likely be open at least part of the time each day. Check with the rangers. TRR status line is 970-586-1222."

After being in RMNP yesterday during the rain and seeing the snow higher up along with the forecast for last night, I thought there would be issues this morning.

Fresh snow on the peaks makes great photos once the clouds lift.

I made sure to put "temporary closure" in the subject line. People on Facebook seem upset thinking that it is closed for the season. There are still many sunny dry days ahead before it closes for good. I checked the webcam at the Alpine Visitor Center and it was a white out earlier.

Of note, the park closed Old Fall River Road yesterday and of course, it remains closed today. It and Trail Ridge Road will be reopened when the weather permits.

The live webcam at the Alpine Visitor Center does not look too promising for opening Trail Ridge Road today. But, that can change.

It would be fun and interesting if this particular webcam would be available year round. That is not the plan. Winter winds are far too strong.

As of 15 min. ago:

Rocky Mountain National Park

Trail Ridge Road just reopened. The surface is wet. There could be low clouds in places. More chance of snow tonight.

Trail Ridge Road is a high-elevation road, cresting over 12,000 feet. Weather can change quickly at that elevation. Check forecasts before you go at www.weather.gov and insert Trail Ridge, CO, for the location.

Trail Ridge Road is not plowed between 4:00 pm and 7:00 am. Because weather conditions may change rapidly, particularly in spring and fall, park visitors should be prepared to adjust travel plans accordingly. The mountains are a rugged, harsh place and it is your responsibility to be aware of the conditions and your surroundings.

Old Fall River Road, the historic one-way dirt road from Horseshoe Park to the Alpine Visitor Center, iremains closed due to weather conditions. ks

And if you look at the live webcam from the Alpine VC, you will think twice about wanting to drive across TRR. It is socked in.

No surprise - it's closed again this morning. I can see the snow on Longs Peak:

Rocky Mountain National Park

Trail Ridge Road closed this morning at Rainbow Curve on the east side (12 mi from Fall River & Beaver Meadows entrances) & Milner Pass on the west side (16 mi from Grand Lake entrance). Why? The road is 85% covered with black ice above Rainbow. From Rock Cut to the Alpine Visitor Center the road is 100% covered with black ice & snow. On the west side, the road is covered with ice and snow starting a mile below treeline up to Alpine Visitor Center. ks

There's a good amount of fresh snow along the Divide this morning. As the clouds continue to move off this morning, it is a very pretty sight.

As of a half hour ago:

Rocky Mountain National Park

Trail Ridge Road and the Old Fall River Road will not be reopened today. Road conditions remain poor with continued snow, rain and poor visibility at higher elevations in the park. dh
