We are a family of 5 (3 kids, ages 7, 9 and 13) coming your way in March 2013. Our 9 year old son really loves the nature and since we don’t have anything remotely reminding of deserts in Sweden he is longing to see it. Could you please give us some advice of what route to take since we only have one night to spend in DV?
We are driving from Las Vegas on the morning on Wednesday march 27 and we need to be in Monterey at the evening of Thursday the 28th. That leaves us with one night that we would like to spend in the park. I did read the FAQ about Vegas – DV in one day but that did not cover seeing any dunes.
My main questions are;
a, what route to take from Vegas through the park to see as much as possible (including dunes)
b, where to spend the night in the park, and
c, what is the fastest route to take from the park to Monterey? (We do not want to go by the coast as we will take that road a few days later going back from Monterey to LA on Highway 1)
We realize that it will be a lot of time in the car on both days, but we only have this one night.
I guess that some of the roads in NV might be closed due to rain in the spring. What website do you recommend me to check before we leave, so we don’t end up on a washed away road? (That happened to me once close to Grand Canyon, not something I would like to do again with kids in the car).
All suggestions and advice are welcome, but please note that we can’t change the schedule and stay more time, we have to be in Monterey on Thursday night.
