Las Vegas to Death Valley

I am visiting California with my family in August, ending our tour in Vegas. Could anyone tell me please how long it would take me to drive from Vegas, can it be comfortably done in a day (returning to Vegas by late afternoon) and if so, where should I head for to get the best feel.Clearly I won't have too long there.

Many thanks

Thanks, Noel-Donna.

Ashjak, also check this more recent thread, which was started by someone looking for more hiking experiences.

The park is so huge, with so much to see, that people wanting to do a day trip need to be selective. Some visitors do not want to do extensive hiking, others don't want to stay in the car all day. August will be very hot, so most people will prefer shorter walks.
