Quick Death Valley Trip |
|
Hi! We are planning a day road trip from Las Vegas in late March to the Death Valley area. We don't plan on doing any real hiking. We want to take a drive and take in the sights. What is a good place to drive to and look..Furnace Creek perhaps? If so, what the best route to drive? And where would be a good stopping place for the night on the way back in Nevada? Thanks!! Take a look at this thread and see what you think. I designed this day trip as a loop trip so you see different things coming and going. tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g143021-i2027-k139… If you start early, you have time to cover a lot of ground in DV during the day. You can go quite a ways beyond Furnace Creek, including Scotty's Castle, the Sand Dunes, and the sights along Badwater Road. If you have a night to spend before returning to Las Vegas, here's my suggestion. Split the suggested itinerary into two tours, seeing more of the west side (the Sand Dunes, Mosaic Canyon, and west of Stove Pipe Wells Village into the Panamint mountains which is very green on the west flank) on the first day. Stay over at either Stove Pipe or Furnace Creek. Have a nice dinner, maybe take an evening ride or walk. There's nothing like a night in the desert to really savor the experience, enjoy the tranquility, stargaze, hear the animals in the evening, and maybe have a coyote or a roadrunner stroll by your door. The weather will be nice in March. The second morning, focus on sights in the eastern part of the park and along Badwater Road. More of the wildflowers will be out in this part of the park because the elevations are lower; it still won't be that warm at the higher levels for a lot of flowers. The p.m. of the second day, return to LV. See if you like these ideas, or we can tweak them a little if you want to see or do something different.

P.S. If you decide you want to stay at SPW or FC, March will be busy. Easter is earlier this year, and March is wildflower season. So once you decide, you'll need to make a reservation. Furnace Creek Inn & Ranch and Stove Pipe Wells Village are both operated by Xanterra. There is another resort in DV, an indie on the west side called Panamint Springs. It's a bare-bones quiet, rustic place. I like it, but I think it's too far west for the kind of visit you're making.
