Solar Eclipse May, 2012

I'm planning my vacation for next year. Planned it to coincide with the new moon on 5/20 for stargazing purposes. Stumbled across this! It appears is it going to pass directly over the Zion/Bryce area. The last time I saw a decent one was in 1970 and I was only nine. Any details would be appreciated. What is the exact date and time? Thanks.

Wow, thanks for the tip. I just checked this out and you're right. The main path is actually between Bryce and Zion. Here's a link:

…nasa.gov/SEgoogle/…SE2012May20Agoogle.html

You can actually pinpoint the times for the eclipse at any point on the Google Map. Maximum eclipse at Bryce is 1:33 UT. Doublecheck this, but I think we're six hours difference during Daylight Savings Time so that would make it 7:33 a.m. Sunrise that day in Bryce is 6:15 a.m. Moonrise is 5:57 a.m.

You could easily navigate a vantage point right on the main path.

Might see you down there!

Maybe someone can tell me where the best vantage point in the area would be, i.e. highest point with the lowest horizon view. I'll be researching this myself in the mean time.

The moon and sun both rise from the east at about 64 degrees that day. So actually any of the overlooks at Bryce would be fantastic.

If you're into solar/lunar activity, or photography as I am, you can get some really cool apps. I use Sundroid on my Android. It gives detailed solar and lunar information including rise/set plus the direction, which is super hand when planning sunrise and sunset photo shoots.

Not yet. Although I haven't researched this much. My younger brother was a astronomy hobbyist when he was younger. I'll be seeing him this weekend so I'll get an answer from him. It does appear to be a sunset eclipse. The charts I found showed the time of the fullest eclipse in the Zion/Bryce area to be 01:30 Universal Time. I believe that area is minus 7 hours so that equals 6:30 PM. I'm just confused on the date, as this area is near the end of the eclipseIf. The chart states 01:30 UT. That means 1:30 AM in Greenwich, so 6:30 PM on the 20th? Not sure? Mt younger brother who is a bit of an astronomy nut will be visiting this weekend so I'll get a confirmation. If sunset, you will have easy access to a sightline westward as there is very little to obscure your view if you travel 20-30 minutes west. We'll be in Bryce so I'll have to do some homework. I think I'll send an email to the Adler Panetarium in Chicago. Don't worry, we have forever until then. I'll let you know what I find out.
