Agree with Marti that the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory (just off US Rt 1 just south of Bucksport) would be a good stop, but am quite sure that access to the observation deck (built into the top of a suspension bridge tower) is available only via high-speed elevator... only stairs available to the public are the ones between the two levels of the observation deck (there is also a second elevator between the two levels for those unable to climb the staircase). The stairs between the ground level and observation deck were designed only for emergency evacuation of the observation decks and for emergency services personnel to use in case of emergency, not for day-to-day use by those going up to the observatory.

On your way to or from Portland, stop and see Nubble Light. It is on an island just off the coast and accessible only by a small team. Not open to the public but it is quite beautiful. You can sit on the shore and eat lobster from the pound there or have some ice cream treats.
