Is pick-pocketing really a problem in Karon/Patong?

Going to Karon in 3 weeks and have been warned to really keep an eye on your bags and go to big efforts to hide money in different locations around your body and in your hotel. Is it that bad? or is it just best to be safe than sorry.

No, pickpocketing is not a problem at all. Bagsnatching does happen sometimes, be careful of that.

I don't take a bag with me anymore but it's not only in Phuket it's just as bad if not worse in Vietnam, I've never heard of anyone getting pickpocketed.

Pickpocketing is a problem everywhere, when large crowds gather. It is nothing special for Phuket. But of course you should never flash your money in public, and don't wear your most expensive jewelries, because bad people can always be tempted.

I've never been pickpocketed in SE Asia but it's better to do as Dennis J said and don't flash money around. Don't carry bags unless absolutely necessary. A small backback is best anyway if needed. Don't dress like you drip cash and leave the diamond tiaras at home. In fact the same applies if you're in Sydney or London.

Pick pocketing and bag snatches are a big issue around the world. When you get crowds of tourists, who casually hang bags of valuables over their shoulders or just put their cards and cash in a pocket someone will take advantage. Not just in Patong, or Thailand, but all around the world.

We have never been pick pocketed in Thailand, or suffered crime in SE Asia, but we were pick pocketed at the Vatican City on a visit to Rome!

Just be sensible not hyper!

we travelling with a 6 and 7 year old so some sort of small back pack is a must as we would want to have our hands free , for obvious reasons. but the rings etc will be off. good advice. cheers.

Most people here wear their rings, I really would not worry. Just be alert and have a fantastic holiday. :-)

Yes just be as alert as possible, don't let fear spoil your holiday.

I have had a bag stolen in London , and a gold chain ripped off in the Philippines, I think either of those could have happened just as easily in Melbourne! We don't worry so much everyday, when we go out at home.

We just should be careful.

Im sure we all remember the bag snatching incident in Kata noi last year. With tragic results for the Australian women. That being said personally we have never had any safety concerns in Phuket.
