Calheta Beach Hotel

We are planning to go to the Calheta Beach Hotel next week - can anybody advise about rooms there? Do the sea-view apartments have views on to the beach or are the sea-vew rooms with balconies better? Also, is it worth paying £54 extra for dinners for the week in advance? We are changing our booking from Funchal as trying to avoid the dengue fever.

Thank you.

Seaview rooms in the main part of the hotel are a good option - light and spacious. The view is mainly of the sea. The beach is to the side of the hotel and not that attractive. Imported sand behind a sea wall and probably rock strewn at this time of year. The food (at least judging from 2 years ago) is reasonable, but not brilliant. If you have a car eating out would probably be more interesting.

Stopped there three times and I would say that sea view rooms higher than 1st floor will have views of the beach.

Calheta Beach hotel is a nice hotel and for £54 I would without any doubt pay for dinners for the week as that is a fantastic price. Food there is nice but at that price you could always miss it the odd day and try a local restaurant.

Opting to stop in Calheta is a good call in terms of Dengue fever as there are relatively few mozzies there compared to Funchal. The whole threat of Dengue fever in Madeira is massively overstated in reality but if you are in a high risk group then Calheta is the best choice for you.
