Trip to Tokyo with a teen

My husband, myself and our 16 y.o son will be visiting Tokyo in December for a week. We all love contemporary architecture and he likes technology and music. We'd like to find some experiences or tours that will appeal to him. Also we're looking for really off beat accommodation - or really ultra modern hotels. Appreciate any suggestions

Tokyo is a rather conservative city, and most of it is commonsensical. Of course, some of the features are new to you as foreigners, but it all makes sense. It's very far away from something ultra- or off beat.

That said, I think there would be enough choices of place to stay that could be both entertaining to children as well as adults. Perhaps the Celurean Tower in Shbuya, or Hotel Century Southern Tower in Shinjuku?

Park Hyatt might spoil or inspire your child.

If he likes trains, the view from Hotel Metropolitan Marunouchi might be interesting:

Somewhere more budget might be interesting enough to children, like Dormny Inn Premium in Harajuku:

If you like the crowds perhaps a stay in Shibuya and then you can leave your son at Tower Records for awhile to choose some local indie music.

I've heard about two theme restaurants - didn't visit either - the Ninja Restaurant and the Robot Theme Restaurant (this one can be organised as a tour)- maybe worthwhile pursuing.

He'd probably like going to the electronic stores in Akihabara and go around the futuristic buildings of Odaiba.

The Asahi Breweries headquarters located on the east bank of the Sumida is a must see if you are into architecture, as is The National Art Center, Tokyo and shopping centres such as Tokyo Midtown (all high end) and Prada and other buildings on Otomosando.

Tokyo is really really safe you could probably let him go around to these places on his own if you guys aren't that into it.

Though it is opposite to ultra modern hotels, going to onsen ryokan like Hakone, with dinner and bath is the japanese traditional resort.
