1 year old baby

My partner and I are hoping to go to Kenya next year with two teenagers and a baby who will be approx 6 mths to 1 year old (depending when we go!).

Is Kenya a suitable place for a small baby? Also, what vaccacinations do you need?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lissyloo :-)

Hi lissy. What kind of holiday are you planning? Beach and safari or beach / safari only? I ask because this will make quite a difference to the answer...

Would love some guidance on this as well, we spend about 4/6 months per year working on a project on the coast and as we have just had our first grandchild, eight months old now, and would love for them to visit us while in Kenya but are a bit wary of mossies etc. Know there are two good childrens hospitals in Nyali but would love some preventative advice as well.

Hi ladies! To answer your questions, as best I can, in order:

Lissy - Kenya isn't technically "unsuitable" for a young baby (after all, we bring ours up here!) but a safari can be quite hard work with one. Leaving aside the baby's needs and behaviour (which only you, as mum, will know), there's the strong possibility that, as a family, you would be required to have your own vehicle; many safari operators don't mix families with couples/singles on game drives. So this can be an added cost. In terms of vaccinations I would ask that you talk to your paediatrician/GP about this - I wouldn't presume to know what can and can be prescribed for a child of that age. Your GP/travel health specialist will also be able to advise you and the teenagers what jabs and anti-malarials to take. Sorry not to be of more help on that one. I would say, if you're the adventurous sort and not easily stressed by bringing babe along wherever you go (and yes, parents do do that here, so it's definitely "do-able"), then go for it. If you think a safari might be too much stress on yourselves and the little one, save it for another couple of years - I've had plenty of guests with two- and three-year-old children on safari who've been fine as long as their attention is engaged.

Mary - congrats on the grandchild! I have a feeling there are paediatric anti-malarials available; again, definitely worth the parents checking this out with their paediatrician. I know for a fact that there are paediatric mozzie repellents available as we use them on our sprogs. Boots the Chemist definitely has them, as I had some brought last time one of my friends came from the UK. Hope this (limited) info helps. It would be lovely if your grandchild could come to visit you!

Anyway, feel sure there are others far better-qualified to post on this than me, i.e. posters who have actually travelled here with young ones, rather than someone with just a local's perspective on things.

You might find the downloads from this site useful (its the site health professionals go to for their info). There is info about what is recommended at what age
