This is probably a dumb question, but do stores take US dollars?

Certainly do, however expect your change in local currency, colones, and the conversion rate may not be the best. I always recommend you purchase local currency through the banks (debit cards, widely accepted) when you arrive for small purchases. You can certainly pay large accounts like your hotel with US. Have a great holiday.
No problem at all...they will take your USD...try not to bring big bills no $100.00 or even $ 50.00 since most people do not like to take them...
Exchange your money once you are in Costa Rica ...hopefully not at the currency exchange office inside the airport...they have the worst currecncy exchange rate..

hello
Remember that a dollar corresponds to approximately 500 colones. is necessary to colones for small purchases like paying the bus or small shops.
If you want more information about the cost of living in Costa Rica I leave this article that talks about the prices in Costa Rica: http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?client=tmpg&hl=en&langpair=fr|en&rurl=translate.google.com&u=http://www.vert-costa-rica.fr/decouverte/vivre-costa-rica-information-cout-de-vie&usg=ALkJrhiu_DE4seQthpLrBwYdqqKPWB58-A
