I haven't been in about 25 years. But I decided to come for the weekend. The hotels were expensive, the ride over was expensive and then all of the shops, bars and restaurants have the same business model: "we're half assed because we can be". Bars are cheesy, shops are old or empty or have cheap chotchkies. The food is ok but they know the next restaurant is the same so they don't have to be better. The bars are inhabited by crusty locals that scare away any glimpse of hope they'll ever have. It's a small island and everyone knows each other. That's what's great but that's what's going to ever stop anything cool from ever happening there. There was a cool skateboarding event there this weekend. I saw some scuffles between those crusty locals and skateboarders. But other than that, looked like a cool event. Catalina is so cute and has such potential. It's just a salty town stuck in the past.
