How old are your children and what are your vacation interests. Do you prefer quiet countryside or big city ?
My children are 3 and 8. We enjoy any water activities. I think we would prefer the countryside so they could be able to run around.
If you enjoy the countryside then you may want to look at either Wyndam Rio Mar in Rio Grande or the El Conquistador in Fajardo.
You will need to rent a car to stay at either of these locations otherwise you will be limited to dining options at the resort only which can get expensive for a family. (mixed drink will be about $10)With a car it will give you much more freedom to explore, dine out, see sights etc...If you do any activities, book these on your own as the resort prices will be much higher. Both of these resorts have a kids club and I think the Wyndam's kids club is better of the two (they do Iguana feedings and kids usually love this). El Conquistador resort is perched on a cliff on the easter tip of the island and the resort and views are stunning. There is not a swimable beach at the resort but they lease a portion of a small private cay just offshore for their guests. They have ferry's that go back and forth all day and it is about a ten minute ride that kids usually enjoy. On the island there is white sand, tons of chaises, great snorkeling, you can rent water sport equipment such as kayaks, jet skis, etc... They also have a beachside bar and restaurant (although it may be more economical to bring one of those collapsable coolers in your luggage and pack it with snacks, drinks and ice before heading over).
There are also several resorts on the west side of the island, however you are starting to get into surf season there so the water may be more turbid, and waves a bit larger.
If you do not want to rent a car there are also several nice resorts along the coast in the metro area of SJ. There you can walk to many dining options, or take public transportation such as taxi's and buses. (Public transportation is pretty limited outside of the metro area and taxi's would be very expensive to take to outlying areas)
Try posting your question on the Puerto Rico Forum as there are many helpful persons on that board. They can give you many more ideas and choices.
