Summer roadtrip from Nothern Virginia to Niagara Falls

We are planning a summer road trip with our two kids (10 & 13). We want to take our time getting to the Falls, and want to know what sites we should catch on our way up. Any suggestions?

How much time do you want to take and what are your family interests?

Have you already seen Antietam, Gettysburg, Philadelphia, the Hudson River Valley (West Point), Knoebels amusement park, Williamsport, Hersheypark, the Corning Museum of Glass, and/or New York City?

You could approach Niagara Falls from the west after first visiting attractions in Ohio such Ohio Amish Country and Cedar Point. You Fallingwater and Pittsburgh, then head north on I-79 to Presque Isle and Waldameer Park before heading a further two hours northeast to Niagara Falls.

For aviation history, it's impossible to beat Dayton, Ohio. Columbus, Ohio, has one of the top-rated zoos in the U.S. and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo also is quite good.

Good planning!

Thank you so much. Your post was very helpful. We plan on making this a two-week trip to make the most of certain stops.

As you have two weeks, here's a thread with lots of nested threads that may prove useful.

If you're visiting Ohio, also check out hockinghills.com and especially the hardwood zipline there and the Tecumseh Outdoor Drama (very unique). There's also a hardwood zipline near Ohio Amish country (Treefrog Canopy Tours near Loudonville).

Near Niagara Falls, here's something different (I've not done this, but it has always sounded like fun):

Definitely consider the Whirlpool Jet Boats, a personal favorite (sit in the front in an open boat, but bring water shoes and a change of clothes). Also consider a visit to the Welland Canal, one of North America's great engineering feats.

BTW, this year is the sesquicentennial of the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American history. Despite the carnage that took place there, it's a beautiful park. Nearby Harper's Ferry also is worth a visit, especially if your family is fit and enjoys hiking elevations.

Good planning!

There's also the Pro Football Hall of Fame and First Ladies Library (if you have a daughter), both in Canton, Ohio, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY.

Historic sites certainly would include Saratoga, NY, site of what historians consider one of the most consequential battles in world history.

Huffman Prairie Flying Field in Dayton, Ohio, is where the Wright brothers first conquered the skies in 1905 in a powered airplane capable of reliably sustained and controlled flight. That plane, the Wright Flyer III can be viewed at the Wright exhibit at Dayton's Carillon Historical Park. Both Dayton attractions are part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. Also in Dayton is the superb U.S. Air Force National Museum.

If your family has an interest in art, check out the Butler Institute in Youngstown, Ohio, which houses one of the best collections of American art.
