New York to Vegas by Train

Me and my husband are thinking of visiting America next year and we are hoping to travel from New York to Las Vegas by train. Has anyone any advice regarding how we would go about booking and whether there are any stops that should be taken in on the way?

There is no train station in Las Vegas, which is your first problem!

You can go to Los Angeles and take a bus perhaps. LA isn't such a bad place to visit.

You have to go via Chicago which takes 18 hours from New York, so a good break of journey could be made there. Chicago to LA takes 36 hours.

Al the information you need is on www.amtrak.com the website of the USA's national rail system. They have numerous rail passes which may be better value than individual tickets but all the trains must be reserved.

Greyhound bus LA to Las Vegas takes 5 or 6 hours. www.greyhound.com

There are places closer to Las Vegas with stations such as Kingman 100 miles away, but the train gets there just before midnight which is hardly a time to arrive in the wilds of the west!

Check out the websites above.

"You can't get there from here". You have to fly into Las Vegas. Do not - repeat - do not take the bus. Go to Amtrak.com and download the schedules for the Lakeshore Limited ( overnight NYC-Chicago), the Southwest Chief between Chicago and LA, the California Zephyr between Chicago and San Francisco. Once you're on the West Coast fly into Las Vegas.

And do spend at least three days in Chicago.
