cruising antarctica on celebrity infinity february 2014

we are planning a cruise on celebrity infinity from south america early next year. we have two choices, one that goes round the tip and ends/starts buenos aires /santiago...or one that is from buenos aires and goes to antarctica.

i am trying to get info about which would be the better choice. it seems like the antarctica one is a lot of cruising and scenery, but is it all the same kind of scenery. the other cruise stops at far more ports.

this will be a once in a lifetime experience and all comments and advice would be greatly appreciated. we live in toronto, canada.

i need help with weather, excursions, in fact anything that anybody can tell me would be great.

Check out the Bark Europa if you are interested in seeing this place on a fitting vessel. She is a 100 year old, authentic tall ship that makes two trips per year with less than 40 guests/trainees. The price is quite competitive with that of the larger cruise ships, but otherwise there is no comparing the cruises. I don't know why this "tour" is not listed here

Listed where ? Trip Advisor is a member based site with member based forums. All content in the forums is solely what has been added by members.

Several other past passengers have mentioned BE in threads but have not done a specific trip report on a separate thread. More - just adding comments to existing threads as you have done here.

If you want to create a separate thread with your trip report and all the details of your trip - myself or any other destination expert can link it to the Top Question trip reports.

The problem is that there is no format in which cruises fit outside of day tours. Otherwise I am sure several operators and their ships would be established and rated here. This ship is a destination with its own merits that takes you to places that have other merits. TA would be wise to make exceptions and create sections for Antarctica and the Arctic that included Expeditions or Extended Cruises. These are not places that are otherwise accessible to the average traveller. In the meantime folks will have to search other sites to gain knowledge of their options on these increasingly popular destinations.

I am considering the trip in January, 2014 and if I do it, will break the ice here in a dedicated forum and/or as a trip review

You would need to send feed back to TA directly for a suggestion like that. They own Cruise Critic specifically for cruise talk:

boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php…

Many of the regulars on the Cruise Critic Antarctica forum also post here.

I fought hard to have the Antarctica Adventures forum created here for the similar reasons you have mentioned - travellers queries were spread all over the NZ, Sth America and Aus forums. This forum has at least provided a centralised location for people to ask questions about something that is so specialised.

But I think (?) you are asking more about a place for the tour providers themselves to advertise on TA. Thats beyond the scope of the discussion forums and more for the companies to discuss with TA. Traditionally TA has never permitted multi day "tours" by bus or ship to be reviewed as its not part of its product plan (so far. There has been a big call on the HUMTAB forum over the years for multi destination bus tours to have their own discussion forum - without success - and I guess cruises fit that too - hence TA buying Cruise Critic).

The forums themselves are for travellers to help travellers, not for the travel companies to advertise or promote in.

We look forward to your trip report thread and I will ensure I link it to the Top Questions once I am back from my own trip in the March.

>Lot more past passengers on that forum who have done the big liners who can hopefully help you out.<<

PP The antractica board on CC is wayyyyyy quieter than here. Nothing since 14th August... and that from what I see is not unusual..

the post before was August 9th

This forum appears to be more used

The difference between CC and here is the majority of cruisers there do full blown trip reports. Not in the forums - but all are linked in their signature blocks and people can ask questions etc under the trip report as well as in the forum so the information is spread around well.

In addition - those that do the big liners post there, those that do the expedition ships post here.

Also - both forums are very seasonal. Posting activity is higher during the actual season - nov to march.

PP I am VERY familiar with CC, been using it since 05, long before TA took it in and in the days when mentioning either of them on the other meant bye bye post.

FWIW, this is a much better and easier place to read all sorts of Antarctic Things

Most of the larger cruise ships have ballasting that prevents sever pitching and rolling. If things get rough the general prescription is take the standard pills like "Gravol" or ginger (holistic), east less, drink fluids and sleep. Usually people get their sea legs in 2 to 3 days. I understand once you are in the Antarctic, seas are not typically a factor as the ice and land mass calm things down.

Meclozine rather than diphenhydramine? I try to avoid drowsiness-inducing meds unless getting sleep is included in the objectives

I'm hoping our ship will provide advance notification of sea conditions. If we're advised "rough seas ahead" at the dock in Ushuaia, I'll pop the pills before the ropes are loosened.

None of my family needed anything during our Svalbard cruise (wihch included some open ocean), and we wouldn't mind a repeat at the other end of the world.
