Do you need a passport to travel from Italy to UK/Ireland

I am traveling in August to Italy then going to the UK & Scotland then Ireland. My friend will be coming with me from Italy. Does she need a passport to visit the UK,Scotland & Ireland? I have been getting mixed answers on this as the trip is very close I'm quite concerned that she won't be allowed to visit on just her I.D. She has told me that she only needs her I.D. Any information on this would be appreciated. Regards Val

She definitely needs a passport and won't be allowed into the country without a valid one!

If she is Italian than her ID card will be ok,if she is of a non EU nationality than she will need a passport.

Hi

Lots of European citizens just travel around Europe on their official ID. So for the UK and Ireland she will be just fine.

When you fill in your Advanced Passenger Information (API) it even gives you the option of using a national ID number. I have friends who travel on this, so I do know.

So stop worrying and enjoy your trip.

EU nationals can enter th UK on a European Identity card.

The airline may (or may not) have its own rules that require a valid passport.

If the OP's friend is an Italian citizen and has a valid Italian national ID card she does not require a passport to enter the UK or Ireland (or any other EU country).

staralliance.com/en/services/visa-and-health/

is the Star Alliance airlines gateway into the Timatic system used by airlines worldwide to determine whether passengers should be allowed to travel or not..

If the OP's friend is an NZ citizen then she will require a passport.

=====================

Shezza that's not correct.

National passports and identity cards are acceptable documents for EU and EEA citizens and national passports and visas are acceptable documents for non-European nationals.

So as long as she is an EU citizen and has a National ID card she will be fine entering on that.

As unclegus says - here's the link as to whether a valid national ID card is enough:

The advice in post 1 is entirely incorrect. As Jackie says, EU nationals with national issued ID cards can travel on them in the EU.
