Air Fare refund due to a death

Please can anyone help us get a refund from Ryanair. We (13 of us) are a football supporters club (Northern Ireland) are travelling to Budapest to watch N.I. play Hungary sept 2014. Unfortunately one of our members a 41 year old has just died of stomach cancer. We are all still wanting to go but are trying to get a refund for his airfare and are hitting a brick wall and cant get anywhere. Ryanair are by far the worst company for helping their customers and make it almost impossible to contact anyone to help sort these kind of problems. We haven't bought any travel insurance yet so we cant go down that route

The vast majority of airline tickets are non refundable regardless of the reasons you are unable to fly and Ryanair are under no obligation to provide a refund.

Sorry for your friend's loss but it illustrates the importance of purchasing travel insurance at the same time as purchasing tickets as this would have almost certainly been covered by the insurance.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

I have just checked the terms and conditions which state.....

10.4 DEATH OR SERIOUS ILLNESS OF A BOOKED PASSENGER

In the event of the serious illness of a passenger making it impossible to travel (or death), the reservations of the affected passenger and of persons travelling on the same booking reference may, at our discretion, be refunded or, as appropriate, modified by our waiving any restriction or fee on changing flights upon suitable documentary evidence produced to us in advance of the date of travel.

It's hard to offer advice without more details about what hitting a brick wall means. Have you talked to them on the phone? Have you been in email correspondence with them? Have they refused to refund or are they still dealing with your claim? Have you sent them a copy of your friend's death certificate?

>>> Cancellation is one of the main reasons for having insurancè, so hard to understand why they hadn't taken it out as soon as the booking was done.<<<

That's a bit harsh. It is quite possible this was a pre-existing condition and as such not covered by insurance policies.

Not really, the comment is quite valid and true of all travellers. If a pre-existing condition exists (and many of us have them) then that is a risk we all take.

In saying that, it does appear that RyanAir's policy on death/serious Illness is quite clear, and that once you have an opportunity to speak with a real person, forward the death certificate etc things may be resolved.

Hi

I doubt any insurance would be valid for someone with such a pre-existing terminal condition.

Just a tip or two when dealing with Ryanair, or any company, in matters like this. The guy was your pal and not theirs, stay calm and polite al all times, if they don't seem to be doing exactly what you want stay cool and use emotional blackmail, never ever aggression.

Good luck and I hope you can sort this out.

Just one point to everyone giving me advice. The friend who died DID NIT have cancer when we all booked these flights or obviously he would not have booked to go . Thanks everyone

Ashey

What problems are you having in contacting Ryanair?

How are you trying to contact Ryanair?

On their website they show phone numbers and also you can use their 'contact form' to chat with one of their advisors.
