Just thought I'd start a thread about this seeing as it now looks like we have to check the valuables we traditionally carried in hand luggage.
We bought TSA locks for our January trip to NYC and I was horrified when we got home to notice my lock missing. I contacted the TSA and this was their response
"Thank you for your email message reporting the destruction of your
Travel SentryTM lock. Travel Sentry locks were developed through
cooperation between luggage, lock and travel accessory manufacturers and the TSA.
Travel Sentry locks are accepted and recognized by the TSA for use at all airports where TSA screening is performed. However, TSA does not approve or endorse this particular product and we expect additional vendors to provide different versions of these "Independent Custody" padlocks to the retail market.
While we cannot guarantee that Travel Sentry or locks will not be broken during security screening, we will take appropriate action."
So the bottom line seems to be that even with these special locks your items are still at risk. We'll all have to think twice about what we pack.
